Virily changes the good, the bad and the ugly!

The Good the Bad and the Ugly for those who have never seen it is a great Clint Eastwood movie.

 Good:

Things we asked for:

  • Ability to edit posts was grated.
  • The ability to block specific Virily users was granted.
  • Notifications were fixed!
  • Maximum posts per day limit

New interesting things added beyond what we asked for:

  • New look and feel

The Bad:

  • Who knows the impact of blocking users.
  • Notifications are a big change (fixed the amount, but now you have to do a little more work). Overall this one is very interesting.
  • The site is slower overall
  • Views are down
  • Profile views don’t always match, Virils are the same but harder to see what is trending. (when someone comments 12 times instead of one, it inflates the comment list without increasing the views of the post). I would love to see them swap the most commented for most viewed. Viewed is a much more important and critical measure than tracking comments (some users comment multiple times, some users only comment once in a longer comment)
  • There is now a maximum number of posts allowed in a day.
  • Everyone appears to have been reset to Newbie for Virily 2.0

The Ugly:

  • When you edit a post, it appears as if a brand new post. That makes it easy to abuse the system.

There are some things that still aren’t working as projected. The site is slower, and honestly, views are down because it is harder to do what you used to do; people are struggling. Let’s see where we are in a couple of days! I think, as a community, we need to watch the impact of editing posts. If you consider that there are things that bother you in a post, go ahead and edit it. But if it is something you can live with, consider not editing the post for now.

To block a user go to their profile page.

Thanks all!!!!

  2. As I have said on another comment on another post about all the changes, I have to admit I enjoy the new look because it is more modern and more social looking. I have not noticed any slowness in loading or whatever else. It will take some time before every Virylians gets used to this brand new Virily. But I am offended that I am a Newbie even though my number of years as a member are still showing the right number….

  3. I am not able to get around as much as I like too. I have found that if you open up more than one tap here things tend to really go bad. The site is a little slower and it takes more time to do things. I do like the new look. I have not edited any of my posts as of yet. I have noticed that views have gone way down. But, given some more time they may go back up again.

  4. Well, I have been changed from “Legend” to “Newbie”..I don’t understand what would happen if I blocked a user from my site. I have no reason to do that, nor do I want to

However, the notifications have been a huge pile that I have been unable to keep up with and I notice that has lessened but has it lessened my virils?

I think it takes a while to discover the full impact of these changes and yes, for me the site is slow.

    • so far, virils are the same so the easy button no that doesn’t hurt you. What was reduced was the noise notifications (opens, posting content etc).

I moved to newbie as well. So did everyone as far as I can tell.

I think the site is really slow right now.

  5. I was happy to be able to edit two of my quizzes only odd thing was that I always double-check each of my quizzes before posting. When I went to edit my African landmarks quiz I noted that I remembered fixing all the problems before publishing therefore after or during the publishing process somehow the quiz got all messed up again I sure hope that won’t happen every time.

  6. As with all changes, there are both good and bad sides. I have not yet edited the post or blocked the user. I don’t feel the need to do this right now. How many posts are allowed per day? Maybe I’m most “bothered” by the site’s announcements and slowness. I’m a little sorry for the comments, because I don’t always have the time to respond to comments repeatedly. I prefer to read posts and learn something new ?

  7. On balance I am very pleased with the recent changes. For a long time, it was discouraging to feel that our suggestions for site improvement were being ignored, but now it is apparent that we have indeed been heeded. Not everything has been addressed, but the ability to edit and delete our own posts is a very substantial gain. It was a shock to discover, when I edited a post simply as a test, to discover that it was published anew and went to the top of the list. There are quite a number of my posts that I would edit (for instance, to add links to later quizzes in the same series), if it were not for that fact.
Blocking is something that doesn’t concern me, so far at least, though it seems odd that it does not prevent the blocked user from commenting on one’s posts…

  8. I didn’t know about the posts per day limit. How many posts per day?
And what do you mean by abusing the system by editing a post and it appearing as new? I haven’t tried yet, but I think that it’s not bad if some seasonal posts reappear, assuming that the author won’t get new virils from the same people who have already seen it. Sorry for the stupid questions, but I am always a bot behind.

  9. For me, things are mysterious here … you don’t see whether you get Virily or you don’t open a co-op … in short you don’t see when and how many Virily you get … everything is mysterious and opaque

  10. It is new to me that the edited post appears like a new one again. So, if we do not want to abuse, we should correct all mistakes before posting (what not always happens, however). About blocking, I have no intention to block someone here if only he/she will not insult me hardly. I want to think, Virily monitors all cheaters and is blocking them.

    • I see nothing wrong in updating old posts – i.e. introducing new elements and not merely correcting typos and grammatical errors. If you can give new life to an old post in this way, why not? You won’t get any “publishing” Virils, but you are surely entitled to the “viewing” Virils that this will entail.

      • the issue is that it maintains its previous status. So if it had 30 comments or more originally the edited version starts as a new post but maintains the previous 30 comments so it leaps onto the leaderboard.

Once you are on the leaderboard your views increase every time.

that is the bug right now. if it were truly posted as a new post, there would be no issues. it is posted as if original stayed.

        • Yes, I see what you mean. However, even if the post had a low number of comments the first time round it will still pop to the top of the “latest” list for everyone to see.

If this proves to be a difficult problem to solve, the danger is that the facility to edit posts might be withdrawn altogether.

  11. Oh my goodness. I tried to edit a post and I don’t know-how. I can’t find the directions. I have many where I have ?. because of an issue with my hand. I wish all those titles could be fixed. It reminds me every day that my hands are not normal and shake and my illness is out there for everyone to see.

Most of my views come from outside this community and that seems to mean nothing.

I don’t understand limiting post – is there really too much to read. As long as people are viewing I don’t see how there can be too much.

Then again, I am stupid. I guess it all comes out in the wash.

  12. View is more important than comment? One can view without reading. What is the point of viewing without interacting? When a reader comments, that is how we can gauge if he or she understands the article. Also, we can discern if the topic we tackled is interesting/helpful or not.

  13. I didn’t know when a post is edited it is published as new. In this case it might be easily abused. Well, for now I will not edit my posts till it’s rectified. It won’t serve as justice to the site.
The dashboard. It matters a lot.
