Let's Make Virily better! Longer list of asks this time!

Well, based on today’s poll, polls are partially fixed! Thank you to everyone that commented on the previous post in this series and to everyone that voted in the poll! Your participation is welcomed, and I thank you. As promised, the first iteration was sent this morning to the admin team, and I am doing this the same way I did it in July when we connected on several of our asks. Also, please note that add anything you wish to have included in the comments. The list today is in order. By that, I mean that the top question is the top response by the community (most yes votes) three new questions and then ending with the remaining original asks in voting order.

Please note that all of these were and have been sent or expressed in comments by community members.

I did want to point out one issue that was raised yesterday. Why don’t we get guest view credit anymore? We did get credit for guest views for a while on the site. In the original version of Virily, we got credit for all the views we generated on our posts, and when sharing to Social media, the posts of other authors. You would see it in your Virily list as a guest view. Around three years ago, the site was so slow you couldn’t use it. Part of the reason for removing that credit was to reduce wear and tear on the site itself. The analogy I shared in the comments is now shared below.

The issue is complexity. Consider a city street. It is managed by stop signs and by crosswalks. What if they had to manage every single person that ever went across the crosswalk and also, once they crossed, they had to be tracked forever. It would create a database of people, cross-referenced and almost impossible to manage. Imagine how slow a system would be if it had to provide the location of every human being that ever walked across a specific crosswalk. While that is an exaggeration ti does show the issue the site had when it tried to connect user, post, and social share. You see, people don’t respond to social shares at the same every day. If I share something on twitter, people see it all day long. But sometimes people see it one day, two days or even two years later.

We did, for time, get credit for sharing (1 Viril per share) via social media. One for facebook, one for twitter and one for Pinterest. That was removed earlier in 2019 or late 2018.

Please choose the things that would impact you as an author. I will recompile the list and publish it tomorrow.

  1. Somethings you mention I don’t know about to say yes or no but to correct my spelling mistakes, and also to put images that I have , like some have too many GBs and others have too little GBs…
I know that on some sites my cropped images which are many cant be used on them and so don’t know what to do on a computer so will probable have to draw them or paint them in colour or else take time (which I don’t have enough to learn how to fix it.)
It would be nice to score as many points as possible and also be informed on any changes.

    • you are so right Pam and the image issue is an interesting one. I would defer to artists such yourself, or Alex as to the impact of the smaller sizes on your over presentation.

  2. It would be nice if we could edit our comments and the admin to communicate to use before rolling over any changes.
That’s we need you hear, you are an IT expert. You explained well why the points for guest viewed were done away with. I wouldn’t want them to reinstate it. I don’t share my posts with my social media friends from Virily or Hubpages. From the part of the world I’m in, no one bothers to click the links to read.

  4. I was furious when virils for visiting views was taken away. Not because I cared that much about the virils although I got a lot of virils that way, but because it was done without letting us know. It was deceptive, the equivalent of bait and switch.

I haven’t shared my posts on social media since then. Virily.com is supposed to be a symbiotic relationship between the site and those who supply content. Not getting credit for views from the outside make it more parasitic. Only one side reaps the benefits.

    2
    • I would think it is not as symbiotic as it was, but you still get paid for what is shared. It is not a pure parasitic relationship.

      Views drive revenue.
      Revenue means the site exists.
      Revenue means authors get paid.

      • The amount of effort compared to the amount of reward must also be taken into consideration. The way I look at it is that my compensation for my efforts was substantially reduced while Virily’s compensation for my effort remained unchanged. It would also have been nice if Virily had been straightforward about it.

        1
        • i agree to a degree. But as a former IT person you know that over time, without thousands of posts and pictures, the cost of Virily has also increased.

          Their baseline is higher overall.

  5. I do quite a few polls because it is a way of starting a conversation here. At first, when I finished with my poll the featured image loaded but would not show before I reloaded the page. Then something changed and the photo came up right away but I still have to reload the page to get the questions just right. I share some posts my own and others to Twitter and FB and I think we should get Virils for guest views. Besides guest views can also entice people to join us here.

  6. #1 It is easy to edit your photo to less than 8Mb, so I don’t really understand what #1 is about.

    #2 3600 CHARACTERS seems plenty.

#3 Guests make ad impressions, just like members do. If I bring guests, then I should get credit for that.

#7 There is nothing to stop us reporting an entire post, by PM for instance. I have done so on some very rare occasions (e.g. anti-Semitic hate speech), and they have been removed.

#9 Communication from the admin team after change occurs would be nice, even!

    • Mr. Mayor (:-))so just to be clear, these are community asks and based on that it is critical that we allow people their thoughts and wishes.

      1. photo size came from 4 different authors. 5 or 6 other authors offered to help them. The reality is, it takes time to resize images. Time some people do not have.

2 there are authors who have asked for the ability to add longer posts (several) there are authors who routinely express frustration with the limited number of characters.

3 – the argument is interesting the reality is this. Virily costs money every month. There are network, storage, site maintenance, site administration, and site improvement costs every month. The reality of that is partially why guest views are not as big a deal as they were.
The other side of this one is, they were removed because they cause massive site slowness issues.

7 yes there is nothing that prohibits reporting content but a long time ago we had a report post button that made it easier. This is about simple. When you don’t get communication you don’t know if your message was received.

  7. I would also like to know what the blue check mark next to a person’s name means on the users list? I see the green means the person is on -line right now. And do the badges get updated regularly? Why are we all newbies? I have been here for a while now. . . 2 years?

    1
    • the blue check means the person is online!
we were all reset to NEwbie status, oh well.

Badges are an interesting problem – mine hasn’t updated in 3 years.

  8. What our work our Virily pays for exactly, and what we do maybe without compensation.
Do you post on FB, and a Twitter post if you do not pay a review from a member there on twitter?
The simple question is: what kind of work do we get for and how much?

    1
    • that is a really hard question Robin.

      1. if we share views go up (and views are way down right now)
      2. many don’t share if they don’t get rewarded for doing that.

I suspect the best situation would be in the middle.

  9. Looks like you had a problem with the survey. I couldn’t answer the question because the answers were missing. I already wrote myself to like to edit my comments and a little more communication.

  10. Looks like the polls still have issues. I have been frustrated for days now. Takes way too long to get the answers to show up correctly.

Yes, would like to edit comments.
