What is wrong with Virily Wrap up!

First of all, a huge thank you for every single comment and vote so far. This is the last in my what is wrong with Virily series!

  1. Over the past six days, I have conducted two experience, One is ongoing. The other finished up yesterday. I asked six different authors to edit old posts. Four of them had posts that were not heavily commented or viewed the first time. The result was they edited the psots, and 5 of the six posts edited did not make it to the Most COMmented list. They also only gained a small number of views. (if they had 40 views before editing, 24, and then 48 hours later they had 45 views) The reality is edited posts do not help you as the author.
  2. One of the posts based on my project was intentionally from an author that would be on the Most Commented list. That post was on the list right away. The gain as projected in my hypothesis, was around 18%. But, that post kept another user off the most commented list. When posts are on that list, they gain comments, views and increased interaction.
  3. My feelings at this point, please be careful when you edit posts. If your post that you wish to edit has 20 comments or more, you will make the most commented list and impact other authors. IF it has less than ten comments right, go ahead and edit the post! It won’t impact anybody else. I will caution you. However, edited posts do not gain the same level of interaction that new posts do! Remember that if you post a highly commented edited post of the past, you won’t gain a lot, and you do impact yourself, and other authors on the site.

One of the things that make Virily so special is the same thing that makes Niume special, and many of the other sites like this that have existed in the past (TSU is another there are many more) is our community.  I got a lot of wonderful comments from people in the community and have shaped the overall poll questions passed on the wonderful comments. I will leave you today with a thought raised by a couple of authors.

We have no control over most of what happens on Virily.

What we do have control over is what we post, what we read, and comments!

The more we comment, the more we help other authors.

Perhaps it is time for the 25 positive comment challenge. (leave 25 positive comments on 25 posts)! I know Carol, Lado, Vidocka, Ellie935, Ghostwriter and many others would have a head start. But we could do that!

i edited this post to prove a point. It is important that we understand the impact of the edit button on other posts!

  1. Comparing Virily and Hubpages, the views are down partially because it is holiday though it’s not the overall reason. On Hubpages I gain a lot of traffic during November and December but not so this year. Some factors may contribute aside from it being the holiday.
We did lost some of regular users and some things are outside of our control. And over here it is you do this to me I will do the same to you attitude.

    • the reality of downvotes always amazed me. I have gotten a few, but after the first one I gave (and the person blew up downvoting 20 of my posts) I stopped.

      it is an interesting issue.

Thanks for your thoughts. Does HubPages pay?

      • That is an interesting observation.
Yes, Hubpages does pay. As an information site, they look for longer articles >600 words. Some users there earn up to $300. As a technology expert, you will benefit there by providing informative and advice articles. There is a user there who concentrates on beauty and another one on mechanics and they earn pretty well. Sometimes, I make up to $100. Mostly I earn $60.

  2. Honestly, I have not reported anything and there are only a couple that I have been thinking about reposting. That is do to the links in the posts. My edit post thing isn’t coming up for me anyway. I love the 25 positive comments a day challenge and is something I will try to do.

  3. Well, as usual, I understood some of what you said but some not. But that is just little old me. I think I just might have to get myself tested for a touch of Alzheimers or dementia or something. Anyway, I edited one of my post not too long ago because I found it was full of typo errors and it was pissing me off. But I have not checked my other posts yet for possible editing. I personally think that the Holidays has an impact on the attendance of Virily right now. I am a prime example of this as I did not even log in on Christmas Day. I wish though that we could get outside views from the general public as once I started to write on Virily, I just googled part of one my posts’s title and there it was on Google ME as a writer. It was a great feeling… But all for all, I will remain with Virily though thick or thin as the community is just fantastic…

  7. Well, Christmas is a very busy season and also I have had other situations why I have not been on Virily so often. However, things may soon look up.
I am still here but often just don’t get the opportunity to go on to Virily when I want to.

  8. I hope that my comment does not take any member too personally. That’s just my opinion and I don’t want to hurt anyone. I assume the most views and comments are by members who are “more popular, better known …”. I don’t know what I found the right words. As I have mentioned many times, I cannot and do not want to force anyone to watch and comment on posts. So I try to keep myself as low on this as possible. I certainly comment every day for 25 posts and more. Maybe the number of comments went down because they restricted the viriles. I often think if new members know the “way” of working. Unfortunately, many of the old members left.

  9. Actually, I never check any most commented posts. If we care about our, as writers’, reputation, we will edit all damaged posts no matter how many comments they have. At least, I will do that. I am not a big commenter here, because my time at Virily is limited, so my posts anyway have not many comments, I hope I will not impact badly others users with my edited posts.

    • i haven’t seen many of your edited posts pop to the top of the list. I don’t think that is an issue if you are cleaning up old posts with few comments.

Let’s get team virily to fix this issue so we can go edit some of the older highly commented posts!

  10. Views and comments are falling …. unlikely because of the holidays … but it is true that quite a few permanent members have disappeared with new members so nothing … I don’t remember when a new member would comment on me

    • hey you haven’t offended me personally in any way. I just worry that the posts when edited if they appear in the most commented, keep someone else from being there.

i am more worried about the site impact of that.

I have, asked the admin team to reset edited posts to zero (don’t give credit for the old comments) hopefully they will get that fixed.

But you haven’t offended me, just want to make sure we still have a site in 5 months!!!

      • I don’t want to be there but … don’t my posts deserve to be among the most commented? Just asking! In other news, I think you’re joking when you suggest that the site will be down because of the edited posts! I think admins will take care of the site much better than a user can. Don’t you think so? If they feel that editing is not beneficial they will ban this. So I say let’s be calm and let the administrators decide. Let’s not worry about a user can lose few views! Everyone has the views they deserve and does not depend on whether the posts are or are not in the most commented list.πŸ™‚

        • that is a horrible message to send to all the new authors on the site.

I would ask that you consider the following:

          1. you make the most commented list often with your photographic posts now.
          2. why not wait, edit the posts you have that are low comments (less than 10)

i did a test with several authors, there are authors on the site that have 100 or more posts with more than 90 comments.

that would 3 edits a day, and nobody on the list for a long time. That will discourage a number of new authors.

          • Seeing myself as an example of what’s wrong with virily or as a person who edits their post to hurt other users leaves a certain bad taste in my mouth too. I still stand by my actions, and this particular post featured here is a seasonal post. I did not want to wait for a whole year to edit it (if virily ever fixes the false positive issue), and I conveniently specified it’s an edited post in the titles for those who don’t want to watch edited posts. I understand your point, but you should understand ours too. We did not make a typo or a mistake, we fixed posts that were messed up NOT by our fault.
