Over the ear versus in the ear? I know what a weird question to ask. It has to do with the reality of earbuds. There are two types, wireless and wired. There are also two distinctions over the ear and in the ear. I have two sets of in the ear and two sets of over the ear headsets that I use for my cell phone. I will say the following about each type:
If I want to listen to music, I use the in-the-ear buds
If I need to talk on the phone, I use the over the ear headset.
In part, that is because, with the over the ear headset,s, you move the microphone away from your mouth, and you are on mute. With the earbuds, I have to mute the phone. When you are on a call, being able to mute and unmute by moving the microphone is a huge value for me. The other value and issue with the over the ear headsets is the time of year. In the winter, the over the ear headsets provide extra protection for my ears. In the summer, they get sweaty. So in the summer if I am outside while talking on a conference call, I use them in the earbuds.
There are many of both on the Market. I use Poly and Jabra headsets. My in the ear are only Polycom, and my over the ear headsets are from both. I did a review of the Polycom Voyager over the ear headsets, and I use them quite often.
I know not a lot of folks on Virily use headsets with their phones. I do use them every day. One of the risks you need to be aware of is not to allow the volume to go to high. You can damage your ears, putting a high noise source that closes to your eardrums.
Makes sure if you do decide to buy headsets to consider three things:
- Wired or wireless, both are good. But what works for you?
- Over the ear or in the ear, both are good, what works for you?
- This one for all headsets and earbuds, make sure the headset you get or the earbuds you get support ANC (automatic noise canceling).

I use my earbuds which comes with the phone during meditation and when I listen to audiobooks. I do not like much voice or video calls because both requires attention – now. ?
i understand that completely. I tend to get distracted during long calls!
Don’t need in such devices cause have not so many phone calls & prefer to listen music on my PC MediaPlayer. But think if I use these things, would prefer wireless types because of the advantages you’ve listed.
Wireless works better for me, I hate having that dangling cord!
I hate all those wires getting tangled every time. That’s why I prefer the bluetooth earphones. Fortunately for me when I got my Huawei p30 lite, I got a free pair of Freebuds.
Using the Freebuds are very very convenient for me especially when I’m driving my motor-bike.
I have used over the ear headset before, but the problem is my ears get sweaty after sometime.
I use earbuds the same way, when there is a high chance of getting sweaty ears! Thanks for the comment!
Another advantage of using wireless earbuds is you can leave your phone somewhere and you are free to move around within a 10-meter radius.
And I don’t have to worry about wires when I listen to the motivational audios as I go to sleep. 🙂
all very true – I use connected speakers for most of that rather than earbuds but earbuds are also good for that!

is this a phone only quiz, or are you also polling for stereo?
My apologies, you are most correct. Yes stereo and phones, however, you use headsets. sorry that I wasn’t clear!
not a problem. don’t like headphones, but if I want to listen to music at 3am…
yeah in that case you would need headsets. 🙂
indeed. or face the wrath of roommates
my roommates (other than one) are more scared of me. the one I am scared of!
the balance of power is critical in any household
the roommate I am scared of is truly scary!
I have never had to use a headset or earbuds,
🙂 One of the things I do is listen to music when I write. If I put headphones though, I end up with people standing either in my work or home office and I get a shock. So I use speakers for that!!!
Thanks for sharing interesting info. I’m not currently using headphones. I prefer to opt for wireless stuff.
🙂 I like wireless personally as well. the cord dangling from my ears annoys me!
I do not use any headphones, dear friend
many do not, the majority of those who have replied to this do not. They have to work for you!!!!
It depends on each individual and the need to use a headset … I don’t have that need, dear friend
it truly does, I need them for conference calls or I am stuck at my desk.
Yes, this is a completely different situation for you and I understand that you absolutely need them, dear friend
I think it is fun to hear what others do with the technology here on Virily!
I am not a big fan of earbuds and headphones, to be honest. After 20 minutes, my years hurt from either of them. But if I have to choose, I prefer headphones, I usually keep them around my neck and not directly to the ears, haha.
they have to work for you to be of value. Thanks – i have a nice over the ear set with cushions that is quite nice! My ears don’t get tired.
I rarely use these, but wireless is my preferred. The lantana is gorgeous by the way.
thanks- old pictures are fun to wander through. I understand not using headsets! Wireless are nice overall, I use wireless over the ear personally!
I love going though my old photos. Many have been scanned.
i have about 300 left to scan I need to get that done!
I am kind of old fashioned in this regard. I prefer headsets to ear buds as they never seem to stay in my ears. Not a fan of wireless either.
Everyone has to do what works for them!
A few months ago I got myself a wireless bluetooth device. I prefer earbuds as I get sweaty and uncomfortable with a headset.
i understand that and I have the exact same issue!
I never use the headsets with my phone.
i understand that – some people do not like them at all
I always go with wireless because I use it when I’m multitasking.
I rarely use it for calling on the phone.
really so mostly music? I mostly use my headsets on calls and seldom for music.
Audiobook. For music, I use my Bluetooth speaker.
I do the same (Bluetooth speaker) for music. I tend to listen to Audiobooks in the car.
I listen to the audiobook while doing house chores.
earbuds must be perfect for that!
I prefer wireless things.
i don’t blame you at all!!!
