Enjoying my sycamore tree in the backyard. It is so big and tall, I can stand underneath and look up to take a photo. A great view from underneath.
The American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), also called buttonwood, is native to the southeastern United States.
When you’re beginning to identify tree types, sycamore is one of the first you might remember because it has so many distinctive features. All sycamores are large trees with thick trunks, and range in height from 60 to 100 feet, depending on the species. All have seed clusters covered completely with small, fuzzy spikes.
There are several varieties of the Sycamore, including the American Sycamore, the California, the Arizona, and the English Sycamore.
And once established, sycamores have distinctive patchy bark in cream, light green and brown. The bark is easily identified, even from a distance, whether smooth or bumpy. That is one thing I noticed about my sycamore, was the bark. It is incredible and like no other tree I have seen.

I have never seen a sycamore tree…lovely photo.
How high does a sycamore grow? When you cut it down then you’ll never know. I first heard sycamore when I watched Pocahonta.
Yes I remember that as well!
A brilliant angle for a black & white photograph.
How kind of you, I enjoy the tree every day.
That is what is great about Virily. We learn so much here. This is an informative post.
Thank you Grace. Glad you are enjoying the site.
Wooow, how huge a tree. I have a small courtyard for this tree ?
Yes it is big in my backyard. I love the view from underneath. A courtyard would be so cool.
Forgot to add this trivia about the Sycamore tree: The sycamore tree in the Bible is a type of fig tree native to Africa and the Middle East. The sycamore found in the United Kingdom is a type of maple tree. North American sycamore trees are plane trees.
so you can call anything a Sycamore?
I suppose that could be true. I don’t personally, just presenting the facts. A sycamore is a sycamore to me.
my favorites is the west coast sycamore, a/k/a palm tree…
This is a really big tree … beautiful picture … nice weekend, dear Carol
Yes it is big and especially when you are down looking up. You too my friend.
Great picture and great information!!!
Thanks, I love these trees, I only have one. Would like more.
The limbs had to be trimmed on the tree yesterday. They were almost touching the ground.
Great view indeed, and a great one for the challenge.
Thanks, I love getting under the big trees and looking up.
Have a great weekend LaJenna.
They are all over Indiana, quite beautiful and grow pretty fast!
Yes, as I have talked about them before they are one of my favorite trees.
I lovr them so I don’t blame you on that@!
Had to trim the limbs a few days ago, almost touching the ground.
we literally had our neighbors tree literally split in half this morning. Funny how that works out.
Split in half? From a storm?
I am not sure if I have ever seen this tree before but great picture! I think Friday is reserved for Black&White images?
There is a black and white challenge every Friday but you can post whatever you want in addition to the black and white. I will post more pics later of the entire tree.
They are in many countries. Maybe you have and didn’t recognize it.
Yes , it is found in our northern area.
That is great, I think many have seen this beautiful tree.
It is cool having trees and plants others have also seen in other parts of the world.
