That indeed is a sad state. While we in the developing countries look up to the giant economies like the US how can it be possible? Blood is donated to a blood bank, the blood bank sells them to the hospital but I never heard of a person here getting paid for the blood he donated.

This practice has caused huge problems. The UK is still picking up the pieces from the scandal of polluted blood products that were bought from the US some 30 years ago (I’m not sure about the exact date) and were used to treat haemophiliacs. However, instead of preserving the patients’ lives the blood gave them diseases including HIV and hepatitis, and a number of people died.
If you pay people for their blood, people such as the ones you describe will donate it. It they are already suffering from a condition that is carried in their blood, and it is not properly screened, you will export those diseases to entirely innocent people.
