When I was younger, the “price point” was much lower than it is today, but it is also too high today for many things. When I was a kid, honestly ten bucks was roughly my upper limit for the cost of things. Now that limit is higher, but I do wonder sometimes. Things that now cost 100 dollars didn’t use to cost 100 bucks. Yesterday I dropped [ped my mouse. I have done that many times over the years, and every once in a blue moon, you drop it in such a way that something breaks. The scroll wheel on the mouse was broken. I don’t use my mouse often (the computer has a touch screen) but when I do the scroll button is the go-to function that I use the most.
You scroll documents, web pages, and so on. That is roughly 90% of what I use the mouse for. First off, if you don’t have a touch screen, then you use the mouse for 3everyting. If you do have a touchscreen then like me you’ve probably begun the transition to the world between the click. Do I use the mouse or press the screen? I find that I use the screen more and more. The only time I don’t now (use the finger on screen) is when I am scrolling and if I need a pinpoint selection. In part, because I am a frequent iPad user, the reality of touch was easier to adopt. That did get me thinking though; I do have a computer at home that isn; ’t a touch screen.
I realized yesterday as I threw the mouse away, that once I started only using the screen on the computer I use for writing, I started trying to use the non-touch screen of my VM computer. I kept touching the screen, pausing and then realizing it is mouse-driven, no touch screen! I did sadly do that twice yesterday. But in fairness, I did not suffer mouse withdrawal. I did decide this morning to get a new replacement mouse, as I was looking online, I noticed that you can get many different types of mice now for computers. What I wondered was the price point. As in how much would you spend for a keyboard and a mouse, or a mouse or a keyboard? I will ask a few questions in the poll, thanks for reading!

I use the Logitech mouse !!
That is what I am getting to replace my dead mouse!!
Fortunately the mouse from different brands are available here for less than $2 but I know how to use keys to navigate.
This is true, but do you have a mouse?
you can always use page up/down keys to scroll. any well written program should let you use the keyboard for everything…
Then he threw out the phrase well-written. The world stopped. The animals rose from the tar pits.
And hell followed behind him.
I ran out of movie metaphors for well-written. Let’s just say the day I see a truly well-written application is the day I retire.
There will be no need for people like me then.
bug free applications are a sign of the apocalypse? given that the others are peace in the middle east and the temple of solomon being rebuilt, they’re all about the same level of probable…
probable yes,
likely yes
happening? not that I have ever seen.
drop a sugarcube into a cup of coffee, then let the coffee evaporate- most of the sugar will remain as a residue, generally a lump of some sort. there is nothing preventing it from resolving as a cube, but it just never does that
Get in a half built airplane. Take off.
Your job, finish the airplane before it has to land.
Good luck.
I love accelerator keys
right hand = mouse
left hand = keyboard
some applications let you bind your own hot keys
Active Words was good for that for a long time. I used it a lot more once upon a time than I do now.
now researching active words
It was a great product with Windows 7, ok with 8, not as good with 10. I can do more with other programs.
I used to be a huge supporter of the product.
so is it like an expert system that you train to do common tasks?
sort of, doesn’t have the AI/ML attributes that I would expect but it is an older application.
so then how does it learn?
AW does repetition based learning (you do this all the time). It isn’t optimal. I used it for a long time to shortcut tasks I do all the time.
how complex can it get? also, can you tell it which tasks you want it to learn, or do you have to wait for it to tell you “I can do this…”
I would say compared to Ansible or Chef, not very complex. I started using it in 2012 (https://scottoandersen.wordpress.com/2012/08/01/another-shameless-reviewactive-words-2-0/)
i stopped about a year ago, noting that now it is used more by Lawyers.
Overall it was decent if you are looking to replace the same things, or automate simple projects.
the apps I use support scripting, so I tend to just use that. the real question is what AW does outside of a text editor…
Low-level automation. You’ll notice most of the reviews focus on the ability to replace text etc.
it also has a built-in dictionary system that is pretty good.
will have to review it in depth after I’ve sorted my outstanding issues
I only use the mouse. I have Logitech for which I paid around 10 EUR and I have been using it for quite some years now.
i ended up replacing my dead mouse with a logitech!
🙂
I have an $8 mouse I got from Amazon and at that time I also got rechargeable batteries and a recharger. My mouse works well and it has been dropped but so far so good. I just noticed that in the Amazon add with your post there are portable monitors and desktop ones for sale but no mouse. Interesting.
I guess I am portable 🙂
The ads are always interesting. I click them every once in a while.
The computer mouse is an interesting problem. I can live without one but I don’t want to!!!
I have a mouse that constantly has to be recharged on the computer..
That can be frustrating – I have a battery-operated mouse well, I did until I dropped it. I ended up getting a Logitech mouse that is rechargeable.
Yes, you are right…It lasts for a few days and then has to be recharged
I am hoping it is easier than the one I had. We shall see!
I use the Logitech mouse which costs 15 eur and is excellent
I ended up getting a Logitech mouse! Thanks pal!!!
I think you’ll be very pleased, my friend
I use the mousepad on my laptop.
The trackpads on the mac make it so much easier than the PC tracks do!!!!
I wish you could see me converting to SA currency while taking the poll ?. I was watching series one Sunday morning, dropped my mouse and it scattered into pieces. I sat for 30 minutes trying to repair the damage but had to give up and go buy a new one.
we have the same experience. I dropped my and broke the connection to the wheel! I could point, select but I couldn’t scroll!!!
🙂
I have no idea how much I spend lol. When I have a problem I call my nephews and they magically come and fix it and have dinner. I guess my cost is dinner with people I love – well worth it.
There you go! there is nothing better than tech support for the cost of dinner!
I paid around $10; and I’ve had mine for years. As a matter of fact, I purchased the same one for my other computer.
that is awesome – thanks!!!!!
I have a trackball on my computer that doesn’t have a touch screen. but i don’t use the mouse on this computer as much so trackball wouldn’t help
I think I got mine for 8 bucks, but its been a few years..Like 8.
i decided to buy the logitech – always safer when I know the company.
We have cheapest mouse here in Just 1.2 USD
that is awesome – i found one for around 9 bucks but it made me a little frustrated. So I think I will send 19 and get one from a company I know.
