I wanted to thank everyone that participated int eh beautiful civil discourse we had yesterday on the top of Smart Speakers. I did want to get such a conversation started, and honestly, I was amazed by the community’s many responses. Thank you all for your contributions!
Recently, we were doing some research on boats. We are looking to move inland with boating and are considering a smaller boat. Part of the smaller ship is to be able to go on some of the lakes around us. Many Maryland lakes now have no gasoline or diesel engines allowed on the lakes. You can, however, use some of the new electric motors on the lakes. I applaud Maryland for preserving the integrity of the Lakes by removing powerboats. But we are also looking for a boat that will go into shallow water. Today, we have to be in water that is more profound than 3 feet. Less water than that, and we have an issue. But many lakes around this part of the world often don’t have more than 3 feet of water.
So a boat that draws less draft. The draft is the amount of water the ship needs to float or the depth the hull goes into the water, below the boat’s waterline. Some of the smaller boats you can get have drafts of 4 to 8 inches. Or less than afoot. I won’t spend any more time talking bout that, just that we’ve been thinking about that for a while.
The other thing about moving away from an internal combustion engine is we will have a greener boat—Green, in this case, meaning a reduced impact on the environment. But also smaller in the sense that we will be able to explore things that are closer to shore. We are moving towards a boat that would be a platform for the things we like to do on the water. One of those things is exploring the short and, of course, playing with the ROV! (underwater camera system). When we first started boating in Maryland, our biggest goal was a boat we could comfortably sleep on. That isn’t the driver anymore. We are now more interested in being able to explore other parts of the lakes, where we wouldn’t be ready to go today!
Thanks again to everyone who contributed yesterday!!!!

I haven’t on a boat in very long time. Doc you are an inspiration sir.
i thank you for the kind words – very nice of you!!!!
Yachts use no fuel and are driven by the wind… but a dingy a canoe or kayak is also free of fuel.
that is our goal to not impact the environment any more!
I tend to stay away from canoes after Jewel’s first album. She had a song on there called “Adrian” about a guy who drowned after falling out of a canoe.
it is all about the life jacket! gotta wear those all the time!
I don’t even want to try. I’m scared
i remember you have talked about not liking water. I am sorry about that.
It has been years since I have been on a kayak.
I should say near two decades
i suspect I would go crazy being off the water for two years, let alone decades!
i would have figured you would be all about them, They are great exercise!!!
Wouldn’t mind doing it depending on the place. Wisconsin has a nice place called Wisconsin Dells. It would be nice to go out one week or weekend to check it out.
Speaking of exercise, it would be nice to actually get out on a row boat. I am curious if it feels like an actual row machine
my father was born near the Dells. My grandparents lived in the Dells for a long time. I spent many hours of my childhood there!
Sweet. I never would have knew about Wisconsin Dells until my clients mentioned they were intrested in doing a getaway there. They wanted me to go with them to lookout for them, but I couldn’t because I had another job. One weekend I wouldn’t mind sneaking away to visit it once this virus goes away.
when I was a kid the Dells was small. Fort Dells (the amusement park) was there but it was small.
Now the place is huge!

We have a lot of lakes and the possibility of paddling on them … when I was younger I paddled several times now but for a while I have never … never sat in a kayak or canoe
i can understand that for me I have to be out on the water! i guess it is a part of me!
I know you enjoy the boat and the water, dear friend
i do, and thank you for the thoughts!
With great pleasure, dear friend
I have been in canoes and rowboats but it scares me to be on the water like that so after a few times I did not go on the water again
i am sorry it scares you that is hard to deal with.
It must be inherited from my mom. I don’t get sick just scared but mom was sick the entire crossing from Europe to New York after WW II
i would bet that was a horrible trip. To go from everything you know, onto a ship to land with nothing you know.
that take bravery!!!!
I love being on water, but I don’t know too much about boats except for the fact that they are fun.
well they float đŸ™‚
thanks, Ellie, they can be fun if you are not scared of them!
Strangely, sailing is the way of transportation that makes me feel the calmest. And I can’t swim.
sailing is the magical connection of human, wind, water and boat.
I have been on all of them including electric boat. The electric boat I hire for self driving has a top speed of 12 km and the motor works for 6 hours/recharge..Sorry, I missed the yesterday’s conversation but I will find it now..
thanks – it was an interesting conversation on smart speakers! got some great input from the community and a very civil discourse!
I have been in both a canoe and a kayak. Lots of fun I need to do again.
we stopped using our canoes when we got the boat time to get back to smaller boats!
I only drove once with a little bigger boat and a few times by ferry. I can say that I enjoyed the ride.
boating is wonderful! but now we are thinking it is time to explore lakes!
The first and last time I was in a boat was when together we were crossing from mainland to island on Lake Victoria. Being in a boat and not seeing anything but water and seeing waves and the boat swinging was very scary. Not knowing to swim and considering how far the mainland was…my heart did literary stop beating then started beating very fast.
boats can be very scary sometimes. sounds like you made it off the lake ok.
Sorry I am missing lots of conversations lately. I have been trying to get Dad’s stuff taken care of and I really have not focused here. Perhaps today I can at least stop by and have some conversations. You have true grit and I should follow your example. I will do my best.
we do what we can do! stop by when you can you are always welcome!
