Monkey Grass plants are used as a border plant around my front garden. When I first planted it I had no idea it would bloom. So cool to see these pretty purple blooms. Another plant that I cut back and it returns each spring.
All monkey grass fall into one of two groups: Liriope and Ophiopogon. Mine are in the Liriope group with the big purple blooms. The Ophiopogon have tiny white clusters of blooms.
There is a Nandina bush growing behind the monkey grass in this photo. I will talk about it later.
Perennials are my favorite. Not much maintenance at all with these plants. And they refer the shade.

Yes I have years ago, funny, maybe they had something to do with the name.
the reason i brought it up is you mentioned you thought monkey grass was a strange name. It reminded me of that story!

I often wonder why plants have some of the weird names they have. This is one for sure. I think its a great border for the bushes that turn such cool fall colors. The blooms look kind of like my sage.
It is a mystery. These make very nice borders. What type of sage do you have?
Mexican sage. The flowers are a light lavender with a white part.
I have written that name down on my long wish list!
Its a good one, might have to be a potted one there, but the sedum wintered just fine. The sage is wonderful smelling.

The scientific name for it is Liriope.
I have this but never knew it was called monkey grass. And yes it has not bloomed so far. What a beautiful combination!!!

This is interesting I have a plant like that called “The Spider Plant”, and I was told it was a New Zealand native.
It does not have flowers and it grows with a root attached I will take a picture of it and you can see it.
I have it in a tree that I put in a pot, and it seems to thrive.

I think I saw this plant before, but now I remember the plant I saw is called Spider Plant. Are they the same type? I never saw those plants bloom before.

I have no Monkey Grass but I have just added Lemongrass as I feel it is a necessity for herb gardens. I am just starting to get new plants in here. I always appreciate a plant that blooms in the Fall.
I too look for fall plants. The nandina (behind the monkey grass) in the photo blooms through the fall.
My favorite at my old place was Pineapple Sage. Nice red flowers that attract Hummingbirds and I also used it in cooking sometimes. The leaves smell nice – like pineapple.
I also like Russian sage. It is on my list to add eventually to my garden. Didn’t know about Pineapple sage.
