Happy March, friends!
Today is one of my favorite Bulgarian holidays called “Baba Marta”. I have written about it before, check out my post called Baba Marta Day if you want to learn more about this tradition.
Basically, on this day people exchange small adornments made of red and white yarn called “martenitsi”. They could be cute bracelets or small dolls representing a boy and a girl. We wear them every day until the spring comes. When we see the first migratory birds, we tie our “martenitsi” to a blooming tree.
The “martenitsa” in the photo represent a couple wearing Bulgarian folklore costumes. I got it many years ago, but I just love it so much that I decided to keep it and use it as a decoration during March.
Do you have a favorite holiday, custom or tradition?

Holidays in March for me is St. Patrick’s Day and sometimes Easter. It is a time for as the others have said a looking forward to the season of Spring and the end of a long Winter.
Very well said, I wish you a happy March!
Thank you very much for your comment!
march is about celebrating life and new beginnings, with the colorful nature blooming in springtime.
I agree, spring is a wonderful time of the year!
It sounds like a very interesting and beautiful tradition. I really like to learn about traditions in other countries.
Thank you so much! I love learning about other cultures too!
In our country we have been modernized, we no longer have traditional holidays.
What does ‘Baba’ mean in Bulgarian because in Kiswahili, the national language among East African countries means ‘father.’
Funnily, in Bulgarian it means “grandmother”. And “Marta” is her name; she’s named after the month March (“mart” in Bulgarian). The month of March is traditionally associated with a woman because the weather changes like a woman’s mood. 😀 It’s a pity when traditions get forgotten.
That’s interesting the relationship between the celebration of March and the changes in a woman’s mood.
True. I think it’s because we have so many tribes and war that exists between them.
That’s sad, some traditions could be harmful and outdated, but others worth being preserved.
That’s an interesting tradition, indeed.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
It is a very beautiful holiday and a beautiful and interesting tradition, dear Ellie
Thank you so much for your kind words!
We do not have any special festivals like this. Nice to hear about other holidays.
I am sure you have a lot of other interesting celebrations. I love learning about other cultures and traditions too.

There’s always a reason to celebrate; the more the better
March is one of those months that you fear the beginning in the US (winter’s last stand) and look forward to the birth again of the world!
Congratulations to Grandma Marta and Ellie to you. Be alive and well.
Happy “Baba Marta”, dear Elenka!
On March 1st we celebrate Mărțișor. It’s a similar holiday we celebrate every year. Happy March, to you!
Happy Mărțișor! I mentioned that in my last post, but I have heard from a Romanian friend that in Romania only women receive the adornments. Is that so?
I read an article yesterday here on Virily about this Bulgarian festivity. The author was saying you put these images in a tree.
Yes, once the first signs of spring appear, we tie them to blooming trees. 🙂
That´s great. It sounds like a cool thing to do.
I iike the martenitsi … can you give me one too. Interesting dolls. maybe I should make this one time.
I’d love to! As children, we used to make them ourselves. It was a fun activity.

I love learning about other cultures too. 🙂
