My brother-in-law was here and talked about the fact that they had cut the cord. I suspect we would as well but right now our cable bill is tiny. What I have noticed however is the evolution of television over the past ten years. I remember when the first VCR’s came out. You would set your clock on your VCR (it never recorded when the clock was flashing 12) and pop in a fresh tape. On a few occasions, we accidentally popped in a VCR tape with other content on it. Oops! The VCR or Video Cassette Recorder was replaced by the DVR. Now, if you passed a VCR tape you ran the risk of breaking the tape. If you pause a streamed, or DVR playback there Is no risk, other than filing your devices buffer.
What got me thinking about this was the reality of DVD’s, We have two Xboxes and one Playstation, that is in the three rooms where we watch DVD’s or movies. Most of the movies we watch are streamed now, but some are still on disk. A game console, if you play the occasional game, is the best DVD or Blu-Ray player out there. Great device for movies, but you can also play video games on them! I am going to ask that in a poll question. The other thing I noted yesterday was the reality of voice control. You can now say I want to watch a ROMCOM and if your device supports a streaming service all, the ROMCOMs will be listed. If you are on Sat or Cable, you will get a listing of all the ROMComs they have in their view on-demand service.
TV viewership has changed so much. Some people have moved to cut the cord or move to all streaming television services. Some people remain in the Satellite World. Others remain in the world of cable (when you get internet, tv and a telephone line for what you used to pay for the phone, it is hard to say no thanks to the bundled service! Now I am curious what lies beyond. Today many of the services allow you to move shows from your DVR to your mobile device (phone or tablet). You can purchase and store movies on Google (Google Play) or Apple (iTunes), and then if you wish and have the memory copy your movies to your device. It is I guess the interesting times of the old curse!

I wonder sometimes if that is something I would do. I still have a DVD player, but I don’t use it anymore.
No more DVD at home nowadays?
sadly we have many DVDs. We use the Xbox game system to play DVDs now

there is nothing wrong with that. it is what you need that matters!
We don’t have a TV at home now, as we don’t let our young kids watch TV programs. I do watch YouTube videos sometimes, but not streaming. I actually didn’t know there is YouTube live streaming. 😛
Youtube does a wonderful job of streaming live!

I have a smart TV, but it still hooks up to the router via CAT5 and all the wireless devices at my place are disabled…
yes, your penchant for hating wifi is well known!
honestly, I don’t hate it but wifi is insecure. my vulnerable footprint is tiny once I’ve disabled all the wireless access points
One of the things we’ve been working on is Wifi that is wall aware.
Basically, you put a sensor on the outside walls of your home.
Anything from outside won’t be allowed to cross the “firewall” ie making WiFI bound to a specific space. The issue is so many people have physical outdoor wifi cameras.
that would make things so much more secure…
The problem we’ve run into is that many people use their back decks and porches with their devices.
That means they leave a vulnerability in their network (back) that also happens to be the one place where a hacker can easily sit, in the open, hidden.
still better than nothing…
I advocate Fing and other home network security devices. of course, it is all about the Cyber Risk you are willing to take on (or not take on).
CAT5 is the lazy man’s security
I have wire running in every room of my house. Mostly, because I want to segment the gamers into their own world!

but half the games are so loaded with malware that isn’t known yet (no signature).
Rather than that on my network, I put them on their own world.
your AV should have heuristics which block behavior even without a signature, and your FW should block outbound traffic regardless
I had a VCR. I have nothing right now. I have about 250 television programs so that is enough for me.

I do not like streaming on my phone. However, I will view YouTube videos and have recently found some old tv series I missed and am catching up on through YouTube, but all on my tv. As well as rent Apple movies. I have a DVR only because I have some old movies I like to watch sometimes.
my wife was a video producer for many years, she collects DVDs and Blu Ray disks of movies she loves. We have more than 800!
Well that is a cool profession. Wow, I don’t have that many but the ones I have I like to watch them.
she started and I just jumped on, we used to have lots of Disney VHS tapes as well, but we got rid of those.
I donated all of my VHS tapes years ago.
we had so many with the kid’s movies and the ones my wife collected. We started replacing them with DVDs, then realized the kids were older and didn’t need all the Disney ones.
We actually gave them to our local library!!!!
I have DVR now and I am using it for recording CCTV as well
that is awesome – I have a DVR for security cameras, and one for TV but they are separate. Would love to only have one!
