When I was a kid, I used to go to my dad’s office. It was a magical place, filled with all sorts of cool things to investigate. My love of astronomy comes from going to my dad’s office as a child. My love of science and the discovery model is more related to my father than any visit to his office. I still have several scientific instruments that I use all the time. Close up cameras for coins. You have to see the coin face to know if it has been damaged or cleaned. I have a Microscope that I use from time to time to examine motherboards. I am more likely to use the close-up camera for that, but sometimes I need to see an even larger presentation of something small.
The other side of small is big. It is funny, computers and cellphones got smaller, but monitors continue to get larger. The other side of monitors is the growing reality of projectors. I watch the projector market, honestly because of the changes and the amazing new capabilities. I have been using the Capsule Projector from Anker for more than a year now. It is in its second release (Capsule II) and honestly continues to get better and better. It is using Android TV, which, as long as your project has WiFI connectivity, means you can watch anything on your device, without using your Cell Phone. That is one of the things that I suspect I am in front of compared to most people.
The concept of burning phone battery is something I remember from the early days of the smartphone. The reality of what you can do with your phone means more and more of your battery will be used. Having a portable projector allows you to use your phone while watching the movie. It saves your battery and also doesn’t force your phone to do a lot of processing.
As people move away from traditional “corded” devices (cable tv, home telephone), there will be more an more drain on your phone’s battery. The future will be a quick plug charger or wireless charging to keep you near 100%.

First, I pinned this to your board.
I don`t have a smartphone, yet.
I can understand. You may come to the dark side, someday 🙂
Talk for an hour on a cellphone?! No way! That will burn my ears off. I actually prefer chatting because it allows me to do other works. Too, I have the option not to reply right away.
That is exactly how I pictured a pixie operating!
I don’t watch TV and I don’t want long phone conversations.
Have you ever worked on the helpdesk? Those tend to be where there are long IT conversations
I have a cell phone and a landline at home. My husband does not like cell phones and cant use them. He does not like computers either.
I am struggling to keep up with it all, and often get called up by someone who knows less than I do.
I just got something for my cell phone today to take selfies with and I will take some time to figure that out…
I did like science at school very much and fascinating to learn so much from my science teachers. However the older I get the more interest I have in living things, health and medicine and also animal life..
And creating beautiful art (things you are interested in)!
I suspect, if I had stayed my original course, I would be struggling with tech and more focused on inter-personal issues today.
It is of course, what we are exposed to every day that sticks with us!
I suppose art and photos also give me an outlet for my own curiosity… Does it surprise you that someone who likes science also likes art?
Not at all, my art expression is poetry. I love any and all of the visual arts as well.
Science and art are all ways of seeing what is there.
I do not like to talk a lot on the phone. And the TV only when it’s my show and the cooking shows.
it is funny our world continues to evolve. I wonder where we will end up!
I have a cell phone just to use it for phone use very little or nothing … most of it I use for imaging … it has a good camera
I use mine a lot, But i’ve been using a cell for more than 30 years now as part of my career.
It’s different for you when you’re still active, dear friend … and I need it for myself
I also think in the “adult” world we have less energy to pursue side things. We have our careers, and one or two hobbies. Past that we are limited by the reality of time.
🙂
I totally agree with you … I’m interested in reading the rest if I accidentally track down … Innovation, I’ve done a lot of work with you, dear friend
Thank you! I suspect that you know I have learned from you as well!
A great post DocAndersen. The amount of things we do with our phones keep increasing and there is a constant need to improve battery life & performance.
It really does! The amazing reality is we have only just begun this journey!
batteries are a serious problem; they weigh too much, too expensive, charge times are an issue, power loss, even heat… we really need to solve some of these issues
Alex, you get it! Plus don’t forget that heat you mention can become a great fire starter
most commonly it just increases resistance, but fire would certainly represent a catastrophic fail case…
You heard the latest failure, right? That the foldable phone will not be released as projected.
I know nothing of this…
samsung showed a foldable android phone at CES and said it would release in May 2019.
it won’t and it hasn’t
I wonder what the issue was that prevented it?
my gut is that the “act” of folding the phone causes the connections (battery and cell antenna) to loosen and disconnect over time. note IMHO…
I could see that… wires don’t like to bend
Right now, in addition to electricity, it looks like the cables will be used less and less… and you are right, we need a great battery now.
I don’t like to talk too long on the phone, but sometimes I can’t avoid people who like to do it.
You made me laugh this morning. I have a mental picture of you walking down the street, and seeing someone that likes to talk long (and you are in a hurry) ducking down a side street. You can’t do that with a cell phone!
I have a number of friends who every time see their numbers appear on the screen, I know I have to prepare my ears and energy to talk and especially listen to them for a few hours…
I suspect they call you, as I write to you, to gain insight. You have much to give Albert.
The technology is really advancing with light speed. I have a television, the internet over the optical network (FTTH). It is currently the state-of-the-art telecommunications, information and media service in our country.
fiber is the best you can get, in the world! 5g will eventually replace fiber in many cases (some not) but right now it is the best.
It is amazing. I remember the grainy footage of Neil Armstrong stepping on the moon.
I also remember this clip. We all sat in front of the television and watched this historical moment
My dad and I sat, at 2 in the morning watching that moment. That is the moment I realized more than anything two things.
1. Anything was possible.
2. My father loved me.
Both of those stay with me today!
I hardly watch TV but the smart TV is amazing, I don’t have to watch youtube on my phone or laptop anymore, The wifi enabled smart TV is the best place to watch videos. I don’t even have to cast them anymore. Technology is amazing but I know when to draw the lines.
That i the critical thing! Knowing where the lines need to be is so important.
How cool, this owl looks like Cotton. The owl at our local state park.
I never talk but a few minutes on my phone.
Talking to my Dad is something I miss more than anything on most days.
That feeling I echo. It can be hard sometimes.
My kids on average are 2 hours. I am, more than that but I work for the phone company.
Interesting time of transition.
No i avoid talking over phone for long time , my call only for few second
fair enough, mine tend to be 2-3 hour calls. I am often out of battery at the end of the day
