Starting a new series on facts about the ten most populated areas in Australia. There were many avenues to go with this series. But I narrowed it down to only ten. Hopefully you will not get bored before I am done.
Australia is a place I have always wanted to visit. Maybe one day. I am learning a lot doing this series. I will share some of the facts I learned with my research.
This post will talk about Sydney. The most populated area in Australia and is the state capital of New South Wales.
SYDNEY
1. Sydney is home to the world’s largest and most varied fish market, second only to Tokyo’s.
2. Due to this shape, ‘The Coat Hanger’ is the nickname for the famous landmark, the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is the tallest steel arch bridge and the widest long-span bridge in the world.
3. Frost/Nixon, The Great Gatsby, Independence Day, The Matrix, Planet of the Apes, are some of the famous films shot partially in Sydney.
4. After phasing out the Australian 1 and 2-cent coins in 1991, the coins were melted down and used in the Sydney 2000 Olympics as Bronze Medals.
5. Sydney was in the Guinness Book of Records for producing the longest line of pizzas at 221 metres in the Italian quarter of Leichhardt.
6. If you are from Sydney, you are called a Sydneysider.
7. Each one of the 10,154 Pipes of the Grand Organ in the Sydney Opera House are named.
8. The Sydney Funnel-web spider has fangs larger than a brown snake’s fangs. They are large enough to penetrate human toe and fingernails easily. Human death has also been known to occur within 15 minutes of its bite.
9. 38.2% of people in Sydney speak a language other than English at home with Mandarin (4.7%), Arabic(4.0%), Cantonese (2.9%), Vietnamese (2.1%) and Greek (1.6%) the most widely spoken.

Most of the facts are news to me. Thank you dear.
Australia is completely unfamiliar to me … I only know what the flag is and what the capital is and that they have a nice opera house in Sydey …. very interesting post, dear Carol
The opera house is in the photo above. I am learning more about the country.
I recognized her, dear Carol
it is one of the nicest cities on earth!!!!
I have heard that many years and hope to find out in my dreams probably.
my friend convinced me to climb the harbor bridge. I was shaking the entire time!
Oh wow I am glad you were safe!
my friend laughed. He loves to skydive, rock climb and is crazy. Until that day I didn’t realize how much!
That Sydney Funnel-web spider is a wicked looking spider too
I saw a photo and would not want to see it any closer.
I just had to look this spider up once I saw it in your post
That is another part I enjoy about doing these series. I learned so much about the US and now about Australia while doing research for these post. We all have so much to learn.
I have an open invitation from my friend to visit her in Sydney. I am waiting for retirement to travel extensively.
I too have a friend but she is in Queensland. When I win there lottery maybe I can go. 🙂
Very interesting facts. I have never been but my last husband was in Sydney and also at one time spent some time outside of the city in the suburbs.
I thought so too, I know little about this country. Have a friend I would love to meet one day that lives in Queensland.
Very interesting facts about Sydney, most are new to me.
Same here, I will learn more with this series.
Thanks to you I met another wonderful country.
Oh good. I love Australia. Cannot wait to learn more soon.
Again a very interesting series.
Thank you for reading. Did you learn anything?
Yes, I was knowing the details before.
The funnel web spider is of no surprise. I have been to Sydney.
Well, I found some very interesting people to speak to I had never met Greek or Italian people before and enjoyed talking to them as well as ordinary Australians.
However, being from New Zealand some looked at me as a Kiwi as we are called and told that people from my place are nothing but trouble and wanted to ask, “What did I do ?”
I really don’t care what they think of New Zealanders now, we are what we do. The Australians come here for work here too and no one says that to them. We treat them well and hopefully one day someone will learn that being kind is a very great thing.
Carol, if you go to Australia, consider visiting Tasmania. I really liked Tasmania, not only is Tasmania beautiful, but the people in Tasmania are fantastic people and very friendly.
Thanks Pam. If I ever go I will make sure I visit Tasmania. My friend lives in Brisbane.
I have met 2 very nice people from Brisbane. I have never been there.
It would be a dream to visit.
