Quiz: Can You Recognise Euro Coins by Country?

Since 2002, many countries in Europe have used the euro as their common currency. While the banknotes are identical throughout the eurozone, the coins are identical on one side only; on the other, each country is free to apply its own design. Since all euro coins are feely interchangeable in every country, it is fun sometimes to go though your pocket, trying to identify where each coin originated.

See if you can identify the originating country for each of these coins. (I’ve rubbed out identifying marks on most of them – otherwise it would be too easy!) Be sure to share your experience below 🙂

    • Thank you, Daniel. You did exceptionally well. I don’t think anyone expected two S. Marino coins one after another. I was just playing tricks – defying expectations 🙂

  1. 5/12. Very interesting quiz. The images on France and Cyprus surprised me a bit. They seem like childish drawings. Would have expected Louvre or Eiffel to be depicted. I wonder what they all denote.

    • Yes, those are quite naive. The national coin designs vary from time to time, and I have seen other more classical designs on French euro coins. This appears to be an extremely difficult quiz :/

  2. I didn’t do the quiz because I am clueless about this subject, however I enjoyed viewing the pics of the coins!!!

  3. My father always collected coins from his pocket. So I knew some of these. Some I had never been to the country, so I didn’t know their coins.

    As usual a fine quiz!

    • Thanks for commenting, Abhijit. The last question is a kind of joke. The answer is fairly obvious, since the Pope appears on the coin, and to make it even more obvious, the other two options (UK and USA) are both impossible, since USA is not in Europe and UK does not use euros at all

      • That’s a good explanation, actually. I am sure you might not have made such a blunder. But thanks for letting us all know your notion behind that question, Norman!
