Some of the risks around innovation

The system view consists of the inputs, the processes and ultimately the outputs of the overall innovation. So in the case of a GPS you would have an antenna that collects the GPS signal. You would have a process that applies the various information provided in the GPS feed and the device itself resulting in an on-screen display of your location and a map.

Finally, as the innovator moves from the logical phase to the physical phase, they begin moving past the system view and model to a physical view including the prototype of the overall solution.

Activities of the Physical Phase

· Building a prototype of the solution (working) but not to scale

· Building a prototype of the solution (working and to scale)

· Initial testing of the prototype – does the solution perform as expected?

· Prepare and plan the manufacturing process

· Build the solution

Based on the core activities in this phase it would appear to be the single longest phase. It can be at times. It is most likely the phase where estimations fail. The reality of innovations is however that the first stage (conceptual) can be the longest. The logical phase is always the shortest phase. Solutions slip in the physical phase of implementation.

RiskImpactProbabilityMitigationThe idea while the sound takes many years to come to fruitionHighHighOrganizations that support innovation through failure are the best mitigation for long germination periods. We underestimated the time to build this new solution.HighHighThe reality of this is communication. Projects don’t slide 6 months in one day, they slip 6 months over 6 months. Communicate early and often about delays. The appearance of failure is painful, but communication makes it easier.

  1. Interesting information. I do not remember the first television or computer. I remember that I bought the first TV when I was married (1974) ?

It ended up in the Ark a computer recycling place. then 2 of us won a small prize from Lotto and from the proceeds got an iG5 apple computer I really loved that computer.
