Cicada Invasion ~ Day 237

From time to time during the summer we will have what I call a Cicada invasion. They will get in the backyard trees and the buzzing sound they make is ear piercing. I avoid going outside when they are buzzing. But I did go out for a few minutes and snapped a couple of photos in my Sycamore tree. They are colorful little insects. Cicadas, as pictured in the photo, have transparent wings and are about two inches long. Locusts are sometimes confused with the Cicada. But they are from the grasshopper family and about half the size. However their buzzing sound is close to the locusts, as they come in swarms.

  1. I had heard their noise before but never seen one. Then one morning I went out to water and saw what turned out to be a skeleton like shell of a cicada. It was quite creepy. That’s when I learned more about these guys. Really nice photo!
