Sharing a photo of a black swallowtail butterfly in Dustin’s garden. The blooms are starting to fade and the visits from the butterflies are getting less every day.
Even though the temperatures remain very hot, the calendar is making me say goodbye to these butterflies.
I have seen many this year with the addition of a second butterfly bush. Many will return again next spring. Care to guess if this is a male or female swallowtail?
Answer and explanation will be revealed soon.

Beautiful! during my walk this morning I saw so many butterflies. But its often hard to take a picture when you are holding dogs who love chasing butterflies.
these we see from time to time. What a great capture!
Thanks, I love seeing them in the garden.
we see them in the field right by the softball/little league baseball field. There are a bunch of flowers as a hedge, and they are there all the time. Well not now, but they were!
I think female ………….
No this is a male with yellow spots.
These are lovely butterflies and have them every year.
Happy to hear you also have these butterflies.
Looked like it was laying eggs, but reading the above line, you know already it is Male I have never seen these butterflies. Thanks for a beautiful photo
I wish he could have laid eggs. He is gone now.
sexual dimorphism in butterflies isn’t my strong suit…
I understand and am not surprised
it isn’t like I can identify genitalia on insects anyway, and that’s not because I respect their privacy…
I guessed that it was a male butterfly, I very handsome one I should say,
You are correct. I will miss seeing these in the garden.
Honestly I would not know the difference between a male and female butterfly (lol)
Off topic. What is your secret of getting so many views in a matter of hours?!!!!!
I always learn about nature almost every day. As for the views, no secrets. A lot of people apparently view my posts. Many every day view with no comment.
I have noticed that. They just view and we do not know who they are and in your case being an old hand you do have may followers and that could be the secret (lol)
That’s a good question. I’m guessing she’s a woman ?
Nope, this is a male! Males have yellow spots, females have blue in this species!
The way the sun is hitting this one, it looks blue, but these are yellow spots. I have other photos with blue spots, which are females.
I am interested to find out how to tell whether it’s a male or female. I am just guessing it’s a male. 😛
You are right. This is a male! Males have yellow spots, females have blue in this species!
I find it very interesting to learn about all nature.
But I really can’t tell the butterfly whether it’s a woman or a man …. I think they’re all the same
No they are not all the same, this one has a color difference. I will explain later.
This is a male! Males have yellow spots, females have blue in this species!
Sorry for posting two comments. I told others I would wait on posting the answer.
Thanks for the detailed explanation …. I really didn’t know that
It is beautiful. I’m not sure but I think she’s a female!
We will find out if you are correct.
