What is carob

Carob is the fruit of the carob tree. It grows as dark brown pods that are long, thick, and slightly curved.

Nutrition facts

Carob is rich in fibre and is low in fat and sugar. It’s also gluten-free and contains no caffeine. It’s also rich in vitamins and minerals.

Health benefits

Carob is a natural antioxidant that has anti-allergic, antiseptic and anti-bacterial benefits.  It’s also beneficial for your digestion, cholesterol management, weight loss, and cardiovascular health. It stabilizes blood glucose and it has anti-cancer properties. Carob also combats diarrhoea.

How to eat carob

You can use carob powder instead of or together with cocoa or cacao powder in baked goods, smoothies, drinks, frozen treats, and raw desserts.

Daily dose

The daily dose is about 20 grams of carob powder for adults and 10-15 grams for children.

Risks

Carob is considered safe and low risk. However, people with nut and legume allergies might show allergic reactions to carob gum. Consult with a specialist if you are pregnant, or have anaemia, diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) or hypouricemia (low uric acid).

  1. I used to get a lot of carob treats at the health food store. Some were amazing, and others were just ok. It is hard not to compare to a sugary chocolate treat, even though it is so much healthier!
