From time to time during the summer we will have what I call a Cicada invasion. They will get in the backyard trees and the buzzing sound they make is ear piercing. I avoid going outside when they are buzzing. But I did go out for a few minutes and snapped a couple of photos in my Sycamore tree. They are colorful little insects. Cicadas, as pictured in the photo, have transparent wings and are about two inches long. Locusts are sometimes confused with the Cicada. But they are from the grasshopper family and about half the size. However their buzzing sound is close to the locusts, as they come in swarms.

Awesome photo! I have never seen one, this is actually the first time I have heard about them!
Thank you, these insects are interesting but sooo loud.
I had heard their noise before but never seen one. Then one morning I went out to water and saw what turned out to be a skeleton like shell of a cicada. It was quite creepy. That’s when I learned more about these guys. Really nice photo!
Thanks, you are lucky to only find the skeleton.
I have no information before about it.
Thanks for the visit and comment.
Always a lesson from you Carol. Do I even need to comment about your quality photo…I think not cos you already know.
Such a kind person is what you are Bradley.
Are they dangerous to a man.
No danger, they are just annoying with their very loud noise they make.
Awe, I see you caught a shot of one of your friends. giggles. Great shot Carol. He is newly hatched, stunning specimen. I didn’t even see the other one, until you mentioned it. Nice!!
Yea right, ha! They are fine if they are silent. 🙂
They are so loud! I hear them in the trees, and of course, lying on the ground as they expire. Amazing that they can fly.
You are telling me Doc! They re amazing little critters from a distance with ear muffs on.
And Hitler used acid rock to torture prisoners. He should of used cicadas!!
What a great idea Kim.
Well, now you know what would work if you ever decide to keep a prisoner. giggles.
Saw grasshoppers & crickets, but never met with cicadas, our climate is too cold for them. Think that there are 2 cicadas on your wonderful photo.
Consider yourself lucky. The sound is so loud I cannot describe to you. Yes there are two.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cicada. I’m sure they must be here, but I’ve never seen one. I do see grasshoppers.
You would know if you had them, they come in swarms and are too loud to ignore.
Then I guess I’ve never seen them. What swarms here is box elder bugs.
I have seen those but never a swarm, lucky you.
They hide in the plants, mate everywhere, climb the exterior walls and generally make a nuisance of themselves in large groups..
I’ve always liked cicadas- I generally base my fairy wings on their design…
I like them when they are silent. And their wings are incredible.
they certainly cause a racket…
Too much for my little ears, that is for sure.
they molt and leave cool shells behind that delighted my nine year old self
Thanks to you very much!
Great picture ,Carol !
Thanks I appreciate your visit!
Wow, I really love these macro close up!!
Thanks, I thought it was pretty cool that he posed for me.
When I was a kid, I went to see my grandfather and grandfather in the village ….I was at night when it was completely quiet, I could hear these insects ..they emit a distinctive sound..
Yes they do and they also sound like the locusts.
Great picture! I haven’t seen such insects in my area. I have seen locusts, but they look different.
Thanks! I will send them your way. Yes the locusts are different, I did not have a photo of a locust.
