As promised a few days ago I’ve been watching the social media posting from Virily. I picked random people I read and split my two posts. I only shared my family history project for five days on Facebook. I shared everything else on Twitter (including the other blogs I read on a daily basis). Out of that, I have come to the following simply conclusions (again this is not a scientific view, I would need access to the actual information from the Virily site to give you more than supposition). Please note that this is where my posts are and the people I read. I feel like one of those drug commercials on TV, in the end, they have to tell you all the side effects of the drug. Sometimes my wife and I sit there and wonder, with the adverse side effects why to take the drug in the first place.
First, Twitter moves the needle a lot more than I expected. Two, to even three times as many views per post than Facebook.
- Average (reading 10 and sharing) 10 views Facebook 30 views twitter
I have also received 11 private messages with the following additional requests
- Share the negative poster list (I will not do this one)
- I have not gotten paid (i posted about this as well already)
What I will do is share, as promised my initial social study. Again, this is very squishy data. The way I collect the data is to share the post, and then literally refresh the browser and watch the change. I started off watching the posts; I know for example that my family history post has more connections on Facebook, so I started thinking, and I will now actually reverse this. I will post family history on Twitter and my technical blogs on Facebook to see what the difference is overall.
I am also tracking the impact of influencers. A couple of the current list of influencers don’t read my posts right now. I am watching to see if the influencers impact other influencers. I am also going to consider asking a couple of the regular readers (influencers) of my posts do not read for a couple of days and see what that would do overall to my views.
The initial findings (5 days) of the two influencers not reading my posts is that my views are the same as they were before.

Use Twitter, FB, Pinterest, Google+, Tumblr for promotion of my posts on Virily + another personal blog. Most of the feedback and comments comes from Twitter, FB comes in second, Pinterest, Google+, Tumblr comes in third. As for certain readers, yeah, have a readership who move your views more than others.
I agree some readers drive way more interaction than others.
I’m a little surprised at your findings. I was expecting the best results on FB. I mostly share on Twitter.
I am having a couple of folks confirm my findings. Remember, in fairness, this is based on how I use Twitter and may not be applicable to a broader audience!
I believe that the results are fair, I think that more and more people use Twitter
It is interesting, some feedback I got from some other writers was that facebook is better for sharing some kinds of posts.
I don’t have a Twitter account, I am trying Reddit. I used Pinterest and got barely any views. Tumblr worked the best so far because I have a photo blog there and I linked my posts which contain photos and got some views.
I have used Reddit for many years, I don’t get a lot of traffic there. I do from twitter but I have a large twitter following so that might just be a normal groundswell. I haven’t tracked tumblr or Pinterest, I will start doing that.
I share them on Twitter, Pinterest and Google Plus but not Facebook because I get better greetings from my landlady than I get from Facebook.
first LOL on the landlandy = funny.
Thanks – you are confirming my thinking so far.
With Facebook you are on a tight lease if you write offending the powers that be over there find offensive I get punished while it is okay for my enemies to lampoon me and get away with it.
Facebook has some interesting rules, i’ve heard from several folks so far that they have been put in FB jail. I haven’t so far, I am sure I will be eventually.
If you do not walk the line in terms of world events on the liberal side, violators will have their accounts suspended or terminated. I had to leave the site because in their words “I talked too much” on their site because of my admiration of the PBS Kids cartoon heroine “Wordgirl ” who ran from 2007 2015. I am the creator of her fictional cousins Donna and Debi Isthmus and their close family friend” Isthmus “Panama” Squirrel.
While i hear your frustration I am sure there is more to the story than the side you presented.
That is true since I found out what I write is an extension of my persona.
I think that is the hardest lesson to learn. Who we are is more than what we say. It is everything we do.
That is so true since some people do not agree with my view of life.
My father used to always say it is ok to disagree. Just make sure both sides have a chance to speak.
Great advice to heed from your father.
How can you determine where your outside hits originated from?
I removed the other social media posts from a specific set of posts and then watched to see which one actually moved the needle.
Overall I got a huge response from Twitter. Some response from Facebook, nothing from Google+ (but I don’t often share there).
I was watching for standard pattern changes (if I normally do x for a post, what happens when I only share that post on Facebook.) I did this over the course of more than a few days.
That makes sense. You’re kinda comparing apples to oranges, but I don’t see how you have any other method of generating metrics and with a good sample set you should still be able to infer some useful data…
That is why the disclaimer. This is wholly based on watching my posts. It is not scientific in any way.
it is as scientific as you can make it without access to the backend
It is, I have also engaged folks on Facebook to collect more data. that way it is at least close to true data collection.
It is will always be off by 20% either way without the backend access.
Which is a huge margin for error, but it isn’t like you have another option available to you. I am impressed at the metrics you’ve been able to generate!
Thank you for the kind words Alex. I can’t wait to see your let’s replace Google+ post!!!!
I really don’t have a candidate in mind, my plan is to migrate to whichever successor Virily picks
That is fair, I would say there are many options, but none as broad as google plus is,….
if they want to go big, they’ll most likely go with instagram. which would suck for me
I have an Instagram account, but I don’t use it often. Let’s band together and see if we can influence the site over the next 20 days.
I will post in the group today, let’s also post here on Virily!!!!
I have one, too but I don’t use it since they don’t have browser support
I use Twitter, G+, Linkedin, Pinterest, Tumblr for the posts I write. I find that when I share them I often get retweets on Twitter which I like. I think the loss of G+ is going to dig in deep for me. I also use FB when I share things on the groups that are now moving slowly from G+ and finally I am also using MeWe which is the choice of those groups as well. The two I know that least about right now are MeWe and Tumblr and just recently I joined Livinia who welcomed me well but I don’t know what good they will do. They offer to boost posts for 1 Euro and that means nothing to me being from the US.
For a $1.22 we will boost your post, that is kind of funny and boost to where?
Are you getting traction with any of the social sites you are using?
I just thinking how to increase my view and i saw this poll.
Well I am glad I shared my early search then!
Oh well, let me give some input. If one wants to grow his or her following in FB, that person has to create a page in FB and post directly in FB. Not as a link to a website. If you post a link to say, your article in Virily, it is very hard to get views because people inside FB rarely click the links. That is the reason I tweet your posts.
See, in late April 2018, my FB followers numbered a little bit over 200. But when I started posting directly in my FB page by turning my poems into pictures, the following grow by the day. Slowly, yes, considering that I only do organic sharing of my posts and do not pay for promotional boost. Still, my followers now numbered close to 4k compared to 200 in April. Note that my type of microblog is not that popular because it is TLDR ? (too long, don’t read type). Most people preferred soundbites, see.
The advantage in FB is that I can reach people who actually read and not rely on read-for-read or like-for-like kinda thing (the principle in which Virily, WordPress and the like thrive). The disadvantage is that one earns nothing out of FB. ??
I end up with 2000 plus views a day from twitter – broken out by 900 wp, 100 Virily and the rest going to Yelp and other sites I post on.
I agree with the Pixie, those fb users prefer to stay in fb for some reason…
I have found (although as stated above it is not scientific) I get some number of readers from facebook.
So I agree they are smaller they do still move the needle more than Pinterest does for me.
Like data consumption reason? They would use more data if they go outside FB, I assume.
based on the very non-scientific model I’ve set up (it is the only way I can actually test) I do get some readers who click through on Facebook. In other words, they go outside Facebook to read Virily posts. Not as many as on twitter but still a number.
Posts from Virily seem not to get viewed, but post them on twitter they do move more.
Twitter really does seem to be the best mode. Thanks LaJenna!
I don’t share mine in anyo social network sites because i have none.
Interesting. Do you share the posts in other ways?
nope i don’t . i don’t have any media. and i don’t use my FB that much. this is fine this way… lol ??
