The concept o responsibility. As a community, we are bound to nothing. We, as authors, have no stake of ownership. We are what is called in the US, a 1099 employee. We are paid, but there are no benefits other than the platform to share on that comes with our being on this site. Or, for that matter, any of the many places that pay money for authors to contribute. We get money, they get advertising revenue and we go from there. So this post is a gentle nudge for some people. The first thing is the reality of PM’s (private messages) that have been sent on this site. No one should ever tell you that you have to comment on their posts because they say on yours!
If I followed that rule, I wouldn’t comment on ½ the posts I read. I say because the author connected to me or I connected to the work. I do not require that people read and comment on my posts when I read their posts. I don’t read the posts of some authors because I don’t have time. I wish I had more time, then I would go back to reading many more authors, but for now, I am limiting my time to 20 posts. If someone sends you that PM reports them to the Admin team right away. The other thing is offensive posts. We are a community if a number of you are offended by posts, you should be reporting those posts to the admin team, we must keep our site moving forward.
support@virily.com to report content, and users that demand you comment on their posts.
Nudge!
I will tell you that I am struggling to stop at 20 posts read a day. There are days when I have to go searching for jobs. But lately, there have been 20 new posts a day!
There were not enough responses on the poll last week, and because of the poll monster, I suspect I will need to repost the two options, so I am doing that today!
If you open this post and you find that the poll monster ate the nos and you want to no-no, please note that by refreshing the page, you will be able to see no!

Thanks for the article. I like to learn new things. And I have just learned that I am a 1099 employee according to the United States. This is funny. I like how it sounds: 1099 employee
happy to provide you with mirth. we are, because money changes hands, employees. There are many rules for what that means and how the site treats us.
it is why we are considered contractors.
Very interesting. Thanks for the information.
sorry I know it isn’t a good answer. It is sadly the reality. Bad behavior often forces bad changes on the internet.
That one of read and respond to mine because I do so to yours isn’t a nice a thing to do. As a community, one is at liberty to read and respond to posts they want.
I remember it was said, when you read and comment to others, others will return the courtesy. The most important thing is that we enjoy ourselves when interacting, and learning things along the way.
i haven’t found it to be true (that if you read and comment people will return that) but I don’t care. I read what interests me!
Some writers here are treated differently than others, I believe. I have heard that some can bypass the moderation requirement, and post directly to the site.
That privilege should be extended to all proven writers, who have been here for a year, or more, and submitted quality articles during that time.
Yes, you are right!! I have to wait a lot to see my posts published and it is very frustrating.
Yes, the waiting for two to three days, and sometimes even longer is annoying, and stops me from writing more.
I do not want to start writing something else new until my pending post is already approved.
Yes, I feel the same. If I do not see my post published I do not want to write something new and sometimes I keep these new articles. It is very frustrating.
i will tell you both what I have told many people in the past. When I was first on Vrily more than 4 years ago now, I used to have 10, 12 or more posts pending publication at a time.
Write.
We are pulling for the site to improve. Getting posts published faster is the number one goal!!!!
we have asked, and will ask again today for the moderators to agree to speed up their process.
it is called a verified writer and they have as recently as 8 months ago added a large number of verified writers. The verified users still have to follow the same rules overall as the moderated users (no profanity, no plagiarized material)
Thanks for the info.
of course, you are a wonderful part of our community!
I think that the rules have to be consistent and not change from month to month.
i don’t think the site rules change month to month. The value of virils change often but that is wholly based on the overall site revenue.
the rules sadly are the same as they have been for four years.
i would like to see a sped-up moderation time for authors!
I agree with the opinion of Ellie. With all the problems on this website, I doubt the new members would persist.
that is a great suggestion Ellie made! We asked for so many of those things to be fixed, will rework that poll!
I hope they can fix at least some of the problems.
fingers crossed so do I, so do i.
Ellie makes an excellent point. Something has to make users want to stay here.
i would have said our community but that isn’t as stong as it used to be.
I know, we are slowly losing hope here.
i think there is still hope we still have great people willing to stand up!
Submitting content to join a site is good. I saw that with applying for writing jobs. Writing jobs typically want you to submit your best work. That is an easy gauge to see the passion of the writer, and the quality of what type of writer Virily will get.
i like that one as well – thanks!
Of course the standard doesn’t need to be high as a writing job for a known site. A link to blog. Virily found me after I tweeted my interest in finding a new blog site.
i agree with that – i am writing up a post to talk about the issues on the site today.
I am off work on Monday, so I may be around to catch it. I do need to seek out my next restaurant to review on Yelp : )
i am struggling with Yelp reviews right now, i really want to go out now mask on, but my wife is still nervous.
i would rather hang out with her, than have a new review site on Yelp.
Depending on the restaurant I’d dine-in, but if it were a packed house I would just get take out. No interest in eating around a lot of folk that I have no clue has covid or not.
that is what my wife feels like as well, outside eating is an option but there is nothing near us that we want to go and sit in our own sweat.
I dined in outside earlier at a restaurant that I typically purchase my Chicago dogs at. I was literally the only one at the restaurant. I am happy they had an umbrella shielding me from the sun. I did get a breeze coming through too.
oh no now I want a Chicago dog. around here as you know, the hot dog is not prepared properly.
I bet they aren’t prepared properly. Hell, they probably put ketchup all on it which is the number one sin.
they do worse than ketchup, they put sweet relish on the dogs.
That is so half ass. I’m going to start a thing where I hit up different hot dog joints around the city experiencing the different ones. You can never fail with just going to a restaurant and getting a hot dog.
I’m sure we have our few in Chicago that just doesn’t get it right. I’d hope they are not downtown hot dog locations too because that is just criminal. I always encourage tourist that speak to me while I am working out to visit the neighborhood restaurants versus downtown.
if I am in Chicago, i make a stop at Portillo’s, but that is for an Italian Beef! The dog stand I loved was downtown, can’t remember its name. It was just off Michigan Avenue.
I was borderline going to get dinner from Portillo’s yesterday at work.
there is no borderline with an Italian beef!!
The thought of making the drive there always turns me off.
Thomas, i am sad to hear you say that. I do understand but still, it is an Italian beef, peppers and a soggy bun!
Back in the day I used to head there before work because I had time to spare after leaving classes.
well somebody had to give you crap for the driving comment 🙂
I miss Portillos, i also miss Giordanos.
I’ve been contemplating a Giordanos visit for years. Also Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria.
i haven’t heard of the second one. Giordano’s is my weakness. but I have never been able to eat more than one piece.
You’ll hear about them both once I visit. I have a better chance at visiting Lou’s first because I have a few near the places I work. Got one in Wicker Park, too that I am scoping out.
my all-time favorite place is still Giordanos but that is because of the memories wound around going there.
I never require anyone to comment on anything I share. I do know also that there are others outside of Virily read my content but cannot comment in the process. Not everyone is interested in the subjects I share and I definitely don’t require them read it. Somewhere out there I have inspired someone with what I have shared even if its 1 out of the 50 or 100 viewers. I consider what I share as an open online diary.
that is a great way to look at this whole thing! Thanks for the inspiration!
I comment when I have the time. Most of the time when I do its either when I have downtime and not interested in posting anything myself. I’d love to comment on every thing I see, but I limit it to the names I mostly see in my notifications.
fair enough – it is right in the do what you can do!
Ellie makes a good point. If the site had been in this current state when I first joined, I wouldn’t have stayed long.
Ellie often has exceptional ideas and points. Today is no different!
The second one sounds reasonable, although no one even said that there will be new users. I don’t have an opinion on the rest of the topics.
If someone joins and sees buggy polls, drafts not working or the long waiting for posts to get approved, I think they would be discouraged. In my opinion, we should start with fixing these.
that, my friend, is a brilliant point. I will resend the asks we had before to the admin team as most of the issues were in it.
I will write up something for tomorrow – thank you for your excellent comment and your very important point.
fix the issues before we bring on new writers Maybe some of the old dormant writers will return then as well!
I really wish some writers come back. There was so much interesting content and fun conversations that I miss.
so do I, so do I.
I do agree with you and am posting shortly the thought that we need to improve the functioning of this site first.
