Captured this hummingbird sitting at my deck feeder. These are called Ruby throated hummingbirds. It is usually the only type I see at my deck.
They will be leaving soon for their migration but will return next spring. In the meantime I am enjoying seeing them at two feeders every day.
Of course the males have the bright red throat, as seen in the photo below. The females have a duller color with no red throat, only white.

The closed related bird to the North American Hummingbird in South Africa is the Sunbird. Although I have spotted them at the local bird sanctuary a while back.
Great shot, with the tripod from the deck or did you free style this one?
The top one I just free styled as I was out looking for the bluebirds.
even more impressive that the image was stable and so clear!
Yes I have seen this in my childhood
That is good, thanks for sharing.
We have humming birds visiting us specially for those Chinese Hats.
That is good you see them too.
I have not seen this type of hummingbirds before. I think I have only seen the yellow ones. I don’t know how much their type. 😛
Yellow? Never seen a yellow hummingbird.
I don’t know why male birds need to be nicer ?
They have to show off for the girls. 🙂
not only must they attract a mate, but the females are dull colored to hide from predators. looking fancy in the animal kingdom is a death sentence…
That is true for all birds. There are so many predators around. Did you know the praying mantis is one for the hummers?
I did not know that, but they’ll kill anything they can. they’re cannibals…
They even have hummingbirds in Latvia, Carol and there they are called kolibri
Oh wow I did not know that. Many countries do not have them. I have seen that name actually.
Beautiful picture , thanks for sharing !
Thank you for the comment.
Have a wonderful rest of the day.
Great picture, my friend .. that beautiful bird doesn’t live here
Thanks, the top one is mine taken from the deck feeder. He was resting I suppose.
Have a great evening my friend.
I like humming birds so much, they remind me of love and make me happy when i see them
I love to watch these tiny birds.
Do you have these in your world?
I love watching them too! yes i have those where i live, last week i was out with my dog and one passed by, they sound like tiny helicopters and i find that adorable
Oh that is very cool. They are so entertaining, very fast.
Is this your photo? It is very stunning…
The top photo is mine, the second one is taken from another source to show the red throat of the male.
The male bird was captured perfectly.
They are very challenging indeed. Both of these are males.
