I love any animal that visits or resides in my garden. But there are minor exceptions. I don’t like rats or bandicoots. I like all the birds that visit my garden from Asian Fly Catcher to Kingfisher.
On animals, different species of lizards and squirrels frequent my garden. Skink is a type of lizard commonly found in our region. This picture was taken by me in Chennai, India. It is a reclusive animal that stays away from human beings. Initially, this one was running away from me. Later, it became a bit curious wondering what I am doing with my mobile phone and chasing this slimy creature. So after about fifteen minutes, it has been kind enough to pose for few shots.
All skinks look like lizards but this specific type of skink moves more like a snake. There is some misconception that skinks can be poisonous but in reality, they are not. So skink is not an animal to fear but admire for its beauty.

This is a Great to See.
We have this animal here, looks angry..haha!
I do not remember seeing skinks
really no such thing as a friendly lizard- they’re all reclusive…
You are right Alex. This one was kind enough to pose for me.
they’re not considerate either, but you got lucky
Unfortunately, I don’t like animals that look like reptiles because I generally don’t like reptiles. I could tell I was scared of them
I understand. There are many friends I know who don’t like reptiles.
There are toads in our garden that I couldn’t eradicate.
I thought toads aren’t much of an issue as field rats. Do they cause any inconvenience?
Have not seen this one, not a fan of this type of animal.
I can understand Carol. I like slimy creatures only if they are not human. ?
Oh that is too funny, a good one. Make me smile.
not seen in my place …..
It is not a common sight anymore even in our place. Many thanks for your comments.
i have not seen one where I live now. But have seen them in the past. Great picture!
I could find one only after I start leaving the fallen leaves in my garden to form a mulch layer. Now, there are enough hiding places for them to thrive. It is true we do not see them as frequently as in the past.
I also lived in a warmer part of the world when I was younger (Thailand) and saw them more often then.
I see them here everyday, but I didn’t know they were called skinks. I thought it was a typo for skunk. LOL
Lol. I am sure you would find this type of lizard everywhere in tropical countries. Sadly, their numbers are dwindling too.
Last weekend I went in the country and I saw such a creature in the yard of the house. I do not know if it was identical to this but it looks very similar.
There are many sub-species within the skink family. What you have seen could be one of those.
