  1. “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally”. In other words, you have apply the operators in the order – Parantheses (brackets), Exponents (powers of a number), Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.

    Given that there are no brackets or exponents here, the precedence rules mean that you must first multiply 3 by 3, to get 9, then add 3 to get 12. You must then subtract the 12 from the initial 3, because minus is the final operator.

    The answer is therefore minus 9.

  2. It would be correct for you to write parentheses.
    The math tells us that the oldest work is done first – it means multiplying .3×3 is 9, so adding + 3 is 12 and finally subtracting,
    3 – 12 = -9
    That’s how I learned math.
