Here’s a cute family of pied avocets I photographed this summer. Do you see the little chick between the couple? That’s their baby, a tiny master of camouflage. I have seen these funny babies before, but this year, I was able to see the eggs for the first time.
These birds breed in temperate Europe and western and Central Asia. In winter, they migrate to Africa or southern Asia. Pied avocets are waders, and their habitat consists of shallow lakes with brackish water and exposed bare mud. They nest on open ground, often in small groups, sometimes with other waders. Their food is mainly insects and crustaceans. Have you ever seen them before?
