I know you’ve probably heard that the only rule of photography is that there are no rules. This is true, since art is in the eyes of the beholder. However there are some guidelines which can be applied to any scene to get it noticed.
Once you become familiar with these tips, you’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to make your photos “work”, while others feel like snapshots.
Here are three easy tips.
#1 Leading Lines
When you look at a photograph your eyes naturally drawn along lines. Think about how you place lines in your composition. In this one you look at the boulders in the bottom right, followed by the second pile of boulders and lastly the farmlands. Forming a Z.
#2 Leading Lines
Leading lines takes the viewer on a journey into the photograph. The winding path is a great subject for this. Forming a lazy S.
#3 Balancing Elements
Sometimes by placing the subject off center you create a void in the photograph. A way to balance this out is by including another subject to your photograph of lesser importance. Like this tree, and the other dogs back.
#4 Leading Lines
#5 Rule of Thirds
Divide your scene like the one pictured above. The rule of thirds means that you position the most important elements of the scene along these lines.
#6 Rule of Thirds
By putting the subjects on these lines you add balance and interest to the scene. Notice how the wood of the pier, the woman and ocean are along these lines.

Sometimes the scene does not permit you to apply subject exactly on these lines. It is okay to be slightly off..
The most important thing to remember is your subject shouldn't be dead center.
