Today is National Bee Day. It is an awareness day when beekeepers, beekeeping clubs and associations, and honey bee enthusiasts from across the United States celebrate honey bees and recognize their contribution to our everyday lives as a means of protecting this critical species.
National Honey Bee Day also pays homage to beekeepers, whose labors ensure there are well-managed, healthy bees to pollinate crops. I would love to raise bees. They are on the decline and are so important to have around.
A few facts you might not know about these special bees. Have you ever heard that bees are the creatures with five eyes? Three of them are set on the head top, and two are complex, arranged at the edges and have a form of two large ovals.
Most researchers believe that with the help of ordinary eyes, bees are able to see objects located nearby. But during the flights they are guided by complex ones.
Bees are able to perceive and distinguish smells and do it better compared with a human being, in 1000 times sharper. Certainly, these insects prefer smells of floral scents. This explains their attraction to the flowers and nectar in our gardens.

Did you know honey bees are on the decline?

Yes

No

I have had more bees in the garden this year than any other time I can recall. Of course they are bumblebees which are the great pollinators.
Bees and Frogs. their decline is a warning sign.
Yes indeed Doc you are correct.
We don’t have this problem in the Asian regions. We have around 9 huge beehives near us, within 150 meters of us. We don’t use chemical pesticides and they are safe.
That is great and they are not all gone but the numbers are declining sadly.
It is the first i heard about such day
This day is only in the US but there is a world bee day.
We get bee hives on our trees but we let them be there. Bees enjoy the honey and the bees are safe. Many around here set fire and drive the bees away and some bees die.
Yes it is sad so many are disappearing.
This is the first time I’ve heard of this day.
It is in the US, not sure if you have it in your country.
I read about a world bee day, you are probably included in that one.
does the US recognize the rest of the world? hard to tell sometimes…
There is also a world bee day Alex.
Wonderful shot. Thanks for sharing facts I didn’t know.
Thanks, and you are more than welcome.
I know they’re on the decline and I know if bees decline further, we’ll be in trouble… without enough bees to pollinate plants, our food source will decrease greatly!!
Yes and I am going all I can, they are so important.
I keep plenty of flowers in the garden for them.
Bees are wonderful I try to grow flowers that help bees and our bees are also on the decline so some have taken up bee keeping and sell their honey.
However, if you know you are allergic to bee stings, for me that is not a very good idea, but I am not frightened of them and I will help a sick bee if I find one
I also provide many nectar flowers for the bees in my yard. No allergies here.
Wonderful picture, dear Carol … we have a beekeeping feast here too, I just don’t know when
Thanks Lado, that is good to hear.
Decline is mostly due to pesticides and urbanization. Poor little creatures. ?
I didn’t know they had 5 eyes, thanks for the added knowledge, and what a wonderful pic! ?
Yes I feel so bad for the bees. Good to see you!
It’s a great shame that bees are in decline. They are so important.
Yes and we should all do our part in keeping them around.
Your picture is much better than the one on Bing today! Thank you for the bee facts.
Wow that is a compliment! Bing pics are incredible. Thank you.
