Was talking to a cousin a few days ago. She is blind. Has been most of her adult life. She said it has enhanced all of her other senses. It made me start thinking about all of our senses. If I had to give up one, which one would it be. I asked her this question and she would love her sight back obviously.
But since she cannot see again, she told me the sense she would give up, given the choice, would be touch. She explained how important touch is without her sight. But with her sight, the others would be more important to her.
After I talk to her I am always thankful for my eyes. We take so much for granted in our lives. If you had to choose one sense to give up, which one wold it be?

Not sure I want to give any of my senses up…I hope that one day cures will be found.
One sense I would gladly give up is my hearing. Unfortunately, yes Carol, I suffer a lot when I hear loud noises like an airplane, a jet, a helicopter, a lawnmower, an edge trimmer, a loud TV etc. But there is one other sound that is almost driving me insane and that is the talking all around me. I am sorry to say that I basically cannot stand everybody talking about everything and nothing lately. So yes I would gladly give up my hearing, but not my sense of taste as I do enjoy a good meal, my sense of touch as I like the feel of most fabrics and cotton and definitely not the sense of smell as I do enjoy fragrances and nature. As for my eyesight, I would not like to lose it completely although I have been wearing bifocal lenses since the age of 10 and I have had to adjust them frequently. But I do enjoy looking at wildlife around my residence, the colors of nature and watching TV but with the sound barely audible…
I understand as I have a health problem that has an affect on my hearing as well. I hope we never have to make that decision.
All senses are important in its own way. We cannot compare one with the other. Each one has its purpose.
Yes I certainly realize that fact! I am only asking what if we had to choose, that’s all!
Indeed, in people with such problems there is an increase in other senses. This is a very difficult choice. I’m not good with the orientation.
I understand. Thank you!
Very well done, you have made us all think about what senses are important to us.
Thank you, you actually understood my point here. 🙂
I can’t give up any of them!!!
This is so difficult!!
And yes, we shouldn’t take our health for granted.
I hope none of us have to ever give any up, I am only saying what if!
Helen Keller wrote that smell was the fallen angel. I have always held that true. The sense of smell is something we often relegate.
Nice post!
Very true Doc. I love reading Helen Keller quotes and writings. Thank you.
She was a gift to the universe!
Personally I would give up hearing, but only selectively!
I won’t give any of these but I don’t listen bad, don’t see evil and avoid speaking hurt words. I also avoid fowl smells and definitely won’t touch anyone with bad intention.
Thank you for your comment. This was only a what if kind of post.
These five senses are the gift from God , Imagine if you have wealth of the whole world , you cannot recover it like the God has created.
Yes I certainly realize that fact! I am only asking what if we had to choose, that’s all!
When you loose your ability to smell tastes goes away. I have to use my imagination.
Thank for sharing Gramps. Good to see you.
I have them all and cannot think of giving up any of those So I have said no to all?
Yes grace, most of us do have them all. I am only asking what if we had to choose, that’s all!
I have almost no sense of smell anyway
So you are halfway there my friend.
I’ve heard taste and smell are closely linked, but that’s not my experience
I have been thinking for a long time about which sensation I would give up. Perhaps the smell.
I have to agree with you as well.
It would be hard to give up any of the senses, dear Carol … thank God for having everything else for once
Yes I know, and I as I talked to my cousin for awhile it made me very thankful to have all of mine.
We are very thankful to great GOD who give us countless blessings.
I am thankful to have all senses.
If I had to give up one sense, it would be smell.
It would be a hard decision.
Maybe smell. I wouldn’t smell anything good or bad. We should be grateful for the senses we take for granted.
Yes I am even more grateful when I talk to my cousin.
