for a moment the pause
a bag on the bench with
remnants of a lunch that
rushed was never finished.
the birds are there, watching as we wait
watching for their chance to
grab a bit of peanut butter spread
with jelly on
bread that
soggy,
lies at the edge of a plastic bag.
but the birds wait
as we wait.
standing still
knees locked
hearts slowing to a single beat per hour
a rate
similar to the silence
as we wait. Birds watching intently
at the peanut butter and jelly
left on a bench
in a crumpled pile
another unfinished lunch.

I am no storyteller. There are things, situations or people that prompt me to write my thoughts. However, I find it hard to write when I am happy.
i wonder if that isn’t the case with many writers. I am more existential when I am sad.
Enjoyed your poem and it reminded me of a favorite bench in a favorite park back in my hometown and in Brooklyn.
ah, Brooklyn, it would have been the sound of a cabbie shouting “get out the way!”
It’s nice to sit on a bench in the company of birds and share food with them … great song, dear friend
thanks for the kind words pal! it really is a relaxing thing!
This is really so relaxing, dear friend
it is very relaxing, now if I could only convince my dog that stopping is a good idea
But you had to convince the dog that rest was also part of the recreation
they have beds in front of the fireplace, that is where they rest! The walk is a serious business!
Nice poem, its great to write I wrote some time ago and hope to resume that soon.
you have a lot going on, hard to carve out time sometimes! thanks Pam!!!!
Interesting song. Birds can howl patiently to get what they want.
they really can wait forever! 🙂
I like the vivid description in this poem. Also, nice E.E. Cummings influence with the poem!
that is an awesome catch pal, EE Cummings was my hero!! or should i say ee cummings was my hero!
It would be interesting to see what my deck birds would do with a PBJ sandwich. They might love it. Great words Doc. I often out together stories in my mind, but never write them down.
I’ve come to look for America, i line by Paul Simon in his song. My favorite line from that song is “playing games with the faces!”
I think many people make up stories about the things they see. Writing them down is a different thing!
Sitting on the bench is fun to share meal with birds.
it is sometimes, the essence of a relaxing time!
