Types of connected medical devices

Connected medical devices have three distinct types of connections. The first is the device itself connects to the internet on its own. The link can be via wifi or cellular. These devices record the information for the Doctor to review, and while capturing can directly and automatically send the information to the Doctor. These devices tend to not be inside the human body, but rather are worn or attached to your clothing as you walk, run, or move around your day. An example of this might be a pulse monitor or a blood oxygenation monitor.

The next type of connection is either wifi or Bluetooth connection to your cellular device. In this scenario, the device can be worn, or it can be implanted in your body. The device then stores data, and when your phone is in range, it uploads information to the phone. In the case of an Apple Watch, the data remains on your device. But there are newer devices that capture information all day, and during the night, or once or twice a day, uploads the information to the Doctor to be reviewed.

The last type of device is worn or implanted, but has a dongle that is connected to your home internet connection. This includes personal safety devices (such as devices designed to allow someone to call for help). This device goes with you wherever you are, and when in the range of the home connected device it uploads the stored data. That is then uploaded to the medical profession for them to review.

It should be noted that the first type of sensor/medical device also can connect to your cell phone for transmission and that the first two are used for urgent medical attention issues. The 3rd is more often used as a failsafe.

    • nice!
when I was a teacher I had a jar on my desk.
when the kids were happy I would open the jar.
They would say Mr. A what you doing.
      Capturing smiles I would say!

Then when it was time for a test or the class was frustrated, bring out the bottle and let lose the smiles.

      worked once a year!
