The arrival of the Intelligent Network

I have talked about bandwidth and home networks many times. To use the new PETA rules, I won’t use the old saying that describes over using a phrase. I will instead say when it comes to network conversations I’ve been putting a small saddle on a huge horse. The reality of the networks of tomorrow is the reality of intelligent networks. It starts, not with the physical network but with all the devices that are connected to the network. The network will have the ability to interact with both the device and with the destination. For example, if you are downloading your mail, there are things the network can do to help you. For example, in the future, you can view items on the server while downloading headers.

The concept is called Caching. There are many products available today that help with the network is caching. The future will bring smart caching. For example, if we know that you, like a home network user, log into your computer around 5 am every day, we can turn on the computer automatically at 4:30 and pre-load the things you normally do early in the morning. As I said, the intelligence of the network wouldn’t just be the physical network but the devices connected to the network as well as we consider that it also allows evaluating network and packet transfer types. To break that statement down we evaluate the critical nature of the information in packets.

If the information is critical but the normal transport method for that packet is done, route the packet to another type of connection. You probably have two networks in your home today. You most likely have a cellular network and either a Cable Modem, DSL or ADSL line, or a direct fiber connection. You could also have a Satellite uplink, but honestly, those are mostly for people living well outside of cities. For the most part most people have two connections in their home (one home network, one cellular). Intelligent home networks will support using either for critical information. What is critical information from your home? Well home security, video and video doorbells watching your front porch need to be sent no matter what. For devices the concept is mesh. I know about 10 other devices, and therefore I know about both ways to connect to the internet if needed.

The intelligent networks are coming!
