Jagged – Merriam Webster definition: not having a level or smooth surface
The Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) or the eastern black swallowtail is a North American butterfly that typically feeds on several host plants. They claim territories in order to mate and male butterflies actively defend it. They are also found and Canada. It is the national butterfly of the state of Oklahoma.
This swallowtail had wings that were jagged. His journey is probably almost over. Sad they only live a short time. I spend as much time as possible in the garden with these beautiful butterflies.
The upper wings and the lower wings are both very fragile. Although they are strong enough to support the butterfly’s body in the air, they are also flexible to enable flight. This butterfly has stories to share from the looks of his jagged wings. But he is a survivor.

Dance, sing and celebrate each day!
The artist leaves us with a sunset to remind us always that there is more to come!
Thanks for those words Doc.
I think insects are pretty much hard wired
Butterflies are very special insects in my world.
this comes as no surprise to me
Another fantastic capture and great lesson!
Thanks very much for your kindness Ellie.
You do have a huge collection of butterflies. This one is pretty.
Thanks Grace I do have a lot in the garden and each one is very special.
Forgot to add this one was for the Macro Monday challenge.
Again, this comment went to the wrong spot! I wonder why.
I have had duplicates and now comments standing alone by mistake.
It’s a wonderful butterfly. I would like to see more butterflies, but we have very few of them
You are so kind, it has weathered the storm and still flying. I wish you had more as well.
Have a good evening my friend.
I really wish these butterflies lived longer. But I enjoy them while I can.
Amazing, you know all the names of insects, flowers, butterflies… Very nice capture.
I do a lot of research if I see something I do not recognize Fortune. I enjoy it that much. Many of the same birds and insects come back each year. But I also see new things each year, so that keeps it fun. Thank you.
Have a good evening Fortune.
Lovely photo of a butterfly that survives many (I guess from his jagged wing)
Thanks, I love watching these in the garden as you know.
Yes, it’s your hobby and we all benefit from it 🙂
You are too kind. It really is my hobby, just glad others enjoy it as well.
Another beautiful butterfly image, dear Carol
Thank you, I love all of the butterflies.
I just do not always do it to me … as I said before, I do not have that much patience
I understand, have a good evening my friend.
Good morning dear Carol
It’s hard to imagine a butterfly fighting! Great post and picture, Carol.
Well, they are probably trying to get away from a predator. Birds usually are the culprit.
Have a good evening my friend.
