Beautiful Buckeye Butterfly

Managed to get a photo yesterday while this beauty was visiting the butterfly bush in Dustin’s garden.

I rarely see this buckeye butterfly in the garden. Maybe because he has such a short lifespan. And when I do, he is a challenge to photograph, fluttering very quickly from bloom to bloom. He has no time to waste.

Egg stage: 4 to 14 days Caterpillar (larval) stage: 2 to 4 weeks Chrysalis (pupal) stage: 7 to 14 days

Adult butterfly stage: 6 to 20 days

The above numbers show the life of a buckeye butterfly. Kind of sad when you see it broken down like this. When they are finally adults, they only live 6 to 20 days. And you may wonder why I take so many butterfly photos. It could be the last time to see them in my garden.

Most butterflies only live days, sometimes weeks if they are lucky. There is an exception as you will see in a Quiz I am currently working on. In the meantime, sharing a few facts you might not know about the beautiful butterflies..

  • The shortest lifespan for a butterfly species, which is just few days, is of the copper butterfly and the small blue butterfly.
  • The average lifespan of a painted lady butterfly is just 2 weeks

  1. I did the quiz. It’s great. It’s saddening some animals have such a short life span. I would wish for mosquitoes and houseflies data to be reduced from a week (I think) to a few hours. Not butterflies.
