I worked for a few years in downtown Chicago. I suspect over the time I was there, that a lot of memories flowed around me. I remember going to the Downtown Chicago Marshall Fields store with my mom. After years of watching the Cubs, with many different people I enjoyed going to games again. Seeing the Cubbies in action live is a treat I will never forget.
There were a few interesting issues over the time I was traveling. The most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me happened in a parking garage in Downtown Chicago. First, this only happened once. Second, it was a rental car, so I didn’t remember what it looked like. Third I was in a hurry and screwed up.
I flew into O’Hare on a Monday am. Landed and wandered over to Avis. I had customer meetings Monday – Wednesday with a team meeting in Downers Grove (a suburb) on Thursday.
I went to the hotel but got a call from a customer on the other side of Chicago asking if I could stop by. I hopped back into the car and drove to the customer site. Sadly, I parked the car in a lot and ran into the meeting with the customer.
When I came out, it was out a different door. I walked to the parking garage and went to the 2nd floor, where I had left the car. I couldn’t remember which car it was so I used to remote trick. I still couldn’t find “my car.” I went down to the attendant area. He said, “what color is the car?”
“I don’t know its a rental.”
“Look on the keys,” he replied.
I did. “White,” I said a little sheepishly.
“Where did you park?” He asked.
“2nd floor,” I said
“Do you remember when?” He asked
“No,” I replied.
“Let me see your parking ticket.” He replied.
I handed him the ticket. He looked at the ticket, looked at me, and smiled.
“Sir this is for the garage across the street.”
I did find my car. Finally.
