Slovenia is a European country located in the far south of Central Europe. It also ranks among the Balkan states. Slovenia borders on 4 countries – in the west with Italy, in the north with Austria, in the northeast with Hungary, and in the east and the south with Croatia.
Slovenia is an average European country with an area of 20,273 km2 and has approximately 2 million inhabitants. Slovenia was once one of the six republics of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. On the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1990, on December 23, Slovenia ratified its independence and defended it with an independent war after the proclamation of autonomy on June 25, 1991.
Today Slovenia is a parliamentary republic – the capital city is Ljubljana – President Borut Pahor. It is a member of the European Union and its currency is the euro.
