I have been waiting all summer long for the butterflies to visit. Finally a black swallowtail came yesterday. He was fluttering around so fast it was a challenge to get a good photo. I had to sit for several minutes to get this one. These are one of my favorite butterflies. They are very large and such pretty markings. As my butterfly bush grows I hope to have many more to share.
The Eastern Swallowtail butterflies are what I see in the garden. They come in different colors. The yellow Tiger swallowtail and the Black Swallowtail are the two I see. Many swallowtails mimic the coloration and patterns of butterflies that are protected by a bad taste. Amazing the things nature has to do for survival.

Sorry dear friend. I did not think I committed on this post so it put a downvote but I hit the upvote.
This is a Great to See.
Wow, great shot! I like them as well. They have the most intense blues.. We rarely see these, but do.
Thanks Kim, I wanted a more clear shot to show the detail but this is what I got for now. I love the markings.
Carol, this is an amazing picture. I can see you hiding on your deck, waiting for the butterfly to cross your gaze and then, capturing the perfect picture. Really great job@ Thank you so much for sharing this treasure with us!
I was actually hiding behind the rose bush Doc! lol Thank you for commenting.
What a beautiful butterfly! Nice
Thank you very much!
You’re Welcome @ Carol 🙂
It’s such a pretty butterfly, I haven’t seen too many this year unfortunately.
One of my favorites, good to see you.
Perfect capture Carol-love it
Thank you LaJenna, appreciate you.
Always good to see you my friend.
they’re way better looking, but they can’t move pollen like bees do
You are right I love watching the pollen bees.
Bees are industrious where butterflies are frivolous. But they’re both welcome additions to any garden…
I enjoy both, the butterfly is a special significance for me.
the butterfly is more visually appealing to most
Don’t think I have seen one of these in person…great photo of the butterfly!
You would remember if you had seen one. I can see them from my window and grab my camera!
Well I could have seen one at the butterfly pavilion I went to in Canada, but that was back in 2002 so I really don’t remember! But that’s great! I’ll keep an eye out for these in the future.
I enjoy visiting the pavilions, you never know what you will see.
I did too, the one time I was able to go to one. Would be cool to go again!
Hope you are doing well Courtney.
Wow, you can be at least an entry level walking encyclopedia for plants and insects!!
All butterflies are butterflies to me lol
How kind of you to say. I just enjoy learning about what comes in my yard and garden. It is so much fun. Each year I learn something new.
glad to know you enjoy learning…
and have surprise visitors … sounds like fun to me too!!
Absolutely, I learn every day if possible.
I am amazed that you even know the name of the butterflies.
I get these every year and if I see one I don’t know, I look it up!
Nice butterfly. Just 123 posts until the end.
You are right, I am headed for the finish line.
Very nice. Don’t see many of those around.
Thanks Gary, I do not see many either and always smile and grab my camera when I do.
What a beautiful butterfly! Very interesting about the mimicry – ain’t nature smart! 😀
Thanks I wait all year for these to arrive. The survival instincts in nature are so cool to read about.
