I will take you through a variety of New Zealand’s Water birds today. I took some photos of local birds close to the area where I live.
Might as well come clean and be honest here, there are some photos here that are not edited but put those here to see a response.
There are more water birds here than what I put in this post. Some birds here, are just about everywhere in Auckland. Auckland, is an isthmus so 3 sides of Auckland, face the sea. Waterbirds are just about everywhere here,
The first bird you see on this post is a Chaufinch which I found on Puketutu Island and he was only one of several in a group of them
Some of these birds can live by water or by land, they just get dinner where they can
#1 Pied Stilts Onehunga Beach
They gave Onehunga Beach some fancy Maori name that I did not take in and as far as I am concerned Onehunga Beach it is.
Onehunga Beach was created when a motorway tunnel was created from Owairaka to Pt Chevalier, and the contents of the beach is the rock that was taken out of the tunnel
Now some time has passed and native water plants were grown around this beach.
I am looking through flax just to see these Pied Stilts and they are effectively screened off by the flax from humans. A good thing.

#2 Tern Onehunga Beach
I followed a Tern in the air with my camera.
The Tern was looking for small fish in the water and dived a few times

#5 White Faced Grey Herons.
These were in Mangere Bridge. The tide was full and these birds only allow you to get so close and then they fly away.
Here I am being carefully watched.
The Grey Heron is a wading bird.

My grandson just said “Hey, look at the skunk birds!”
Well there are not skunk birds in New Zealand. I have never seen a Skunk but think I know what they look like now.
Love their markings, wow!
