Oh, views where you have gone?
One of the things that are important to remember is that comments are one of the things that help authors. The deep comment thread (multiple comments) carries with it a fantastic bonus. First off, if the feedback is given to an author and they reply, it is a beautiful gift. If a conversation ensues with that, you will see many more views on your post. Simply put, every comment is gold!
But it is important to remember this. The conversation is where the value happens. If you have one comment from the author and the 30 from another author, without a give and take, that doesn’t help as much as a conversation with 30 comments from both. When there is a friendly conversation, other authors leave comments.
The other thing to consider is the health of the site. One of the things the google Adsense engine does is it parses the posts and matches that toads (the lower ads that have products). Why am I bringing that up? Well, here is the sad reality for us going forward. Adsense pays on view time. The fact of a post that is opened upvoted, and then the reader moves on, is a 15 to 20 second opening of that post. The impact of that sadly is that the site gets less money. So, if you open, upvote, and move on, you are impacting all of us indirectly. Take a moment (or 45 seconds) and either leave a comment or simply read the post. The more people understand, the longer the average time per post is, and the more the site gets paid.
A couple of issues, please let me know if they have impacted you.
- Unable to post (you get a permissions issue).
- The post goes to the moderators, you are notified it is approved, but you cannot see the post anywhere on the site (including your profile).
I sent the author names to the admin team that has both these issues but happy to add names if more authors have these two issues.

No issues here lately. Although I am still waiting for them to fix the quizzes and polls, bring that draft button back.
About the reading, and commenting. If I pull up your post, most of the time I read it all. The only time I don’t read it is when I open one and realize I have nothing to say, but I usually always try leave a comment. I feel that’s the least we can do. The person spent a lot of time and thought about their post and deserve some feedback. I also always check my notifications to reply to all of the comments I have made, not only on mine but other’s posts.
I am guilty of not pulling up enough posts per day to read. I will try to do better. 40 posts sounds doable. This will be my new goal. I also try to post one post a day, I could also up that too. Thank you once again!
Forty posts, well, I will give it a try. I am training for a new job so it might be tricky timing. Still, I can rearrange some things. A week’s worth would be 280. I think focus on having the entire week to get 280 posts read. So keep on writing and I will do my best to keep on reading and commenting.
you are both well above what I can do at that point. I am lucky to get to 30 most days.
Yes, we should always leave a comment, this is why Virily made a mistake when they eliminate virilys when one comments.
there is a cap on comments, but I do agree, The issue was there were two users that were in fact getting to many virils for one-off comments.
in other words the bad behavior of two users costs all of us.
I am very happy in Virily but of course, now it seems they pay less money. I try to leave a comment when I read something, it is the best for everybody and many times you learn things when you read posts here on Virily.
it also pays the author – (they get credit for the member view). but overall i do agree with you!
Okay, so if I were setting a goal for myself. Would it be something like write one post a day and make 100 comments. Or would it be write 5 posts a day and make a 100 comments. Would you back in time and comment?
i would say post as often as you want, that drives a constant stream (you tend to pull a lot of external views) so that is good.
then from there, i would set a goal of comment on 30 posts a day! that is my goal and it works for me.

It would be better if they give us data on the site.
I agree opening and reading a post affects the increase of traffic on the site and increase in Adsense value as I’ve noted in Hubpages
Great it sounds like most of us agree on that.
well you’ve got three downvotes, somebody doesn’t agree!
Oh well, I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire
Am I being honored as well?
you and jonnny cash! that made me laugh!
Big grin. I love that song. lol.
Yes, most people agree even if they don’t respond. It is a fact.
that is very true – it is only one person downvoting!
yes it is (listed on hubpages) it is not just the opening and closing the impacts the value. it is that eyes on page rating!
Yah, it also increase page rating and rating of the site.
which is what we need now. Reddit classes a lot of Virily content as spam now.
Okay wait, does a thumbs up or down affect anything? Does an upvote and downvote make a difference? How do I get so lost?
Sometimes my eyes get really tired. I guess eyedrops may help that.
it does help sometimes
(eye drops)
thumbs up or down does nothing.
Does too, makes you have cool gifts from the wife!
I usually comment on all the posts I read. So far, I have not had any problems with posting or anything else.
It’s good to know you haven’t had any problems.
it seems to have impacted a couple of authors, odd at best!
thanks we do what we can do!
I try to comment as much as I can but if I don’t have something valuable to say, I leave without writing a comment. I am not much of a talker in general, but I enjoy the interactions here.
This made a thought drop right in my head and I have to laugh. “Try there is no try, do it or do it not.” It made me laugh, don’t be serious with it.
I like to believe that every effort counts.
As do I ellie925. What I thought was funny is that popped in my head. It was strange. It was no reflection on you.
i truly agree with that! every effort does count!
i’ve had long conversation threads, it is not just commenting. It is time on page (or as the google folks call it eyes on page)!
That’s a good point. It’s possible that some non-commenters have spent much more time reading that some of the commenters.
The more we talk the more we learn and think outside the box, I believe.
i agree the more that is out, the better our response will be.
that is possible, but the impact would be the question –
the wise man said if your goal is to leave footprints for others to follow, do not walk at the edge of the low tide surf.
Too many people want others to follow their footprints that there are not enough followers.
in the US we say too many chiefs, not enough braves!
That’s very well said!
I am a pretty good follower.
If I open the post I also read it and if possible comment on it. Sometimes I run out of time so the comments are shorter.
this is the operative thing – we do what time allows. The fact that you open, read and comment short or long, makes a huge difference!

i am posting early to point out the interesting reality of these numbers.
At least some people are responding.
yes it does seem to be getting responses!
Personally, I may be late but I always comment. There are members whose posts I comment on, but they do not comment on mine. I always read posts.
i do not think you comment late my friend. I think you are busy and like all of us you do what you can do!
I try to always comment as time allows. I have opened and not commented on those that are perhaps insulting to read. But I comment on almost all posts.
i have the same issue. I also watch who comments a lot. we as authors really only get paid on having members comment and deep comment threads. Because we only get paid on views by members!
Many do not comment and when they do (some, not all), it is more of a passing comment it seems.
it does feel that way sometimes. I guess I am looking for conversations in the comments and I haven’t been finding as many now as I used to!
@Carol DM many of my comments don’t make sense when I read them three days later, but I know that I meant something when I wrote them. How deep does a deep comment thread have to be, anyone can answer.
so the easy answer is a math problem.
the author posts a post.
the reader reads and comments
the author replies
reader replies
that makes 3 views for the author, plus the comment points.
External views are awesome, but Virily views pay. based on what i am seeing there are less than 75 active writers on the site now.
Doc, it always makes me laugh when you give us the answer so we don’t mess up. Thank you.
Here is my selfish little problem with comments. For an entire month, I carefully counted my comments. I carefully counted the comments and responses on mine. (Needless to say, I must rarely say much of value.) For every 40 comments, I get between 4 or 5. Since that time, my heart hasn’t been here so much because it feels very trampled.
I will give it another try and I will say, it can’t go on like it has been for a long time now.
i truly know the feeling! i comment on 20-30 posts a day. i get 10, 12 comments back. i don’t know what to do anymore.
Oh my, I see the downvote. It is kind of like swatting flies now. It’s a challenge about how many I notice. I am ashamed to say I am liking the feeling of swatting that fly.
i got to buy sometimes i’ve wanted because of the downvotes. My wife won’t let me do that a second time.
so, in my book they are gnats. I do like that swatting metaphor!
I guess that is why others were talking to themselves. If we don’t get this right we are done.
as a wise man once said, we are at the edge of great change, where we go is up to us.
to your last point, I agree. we need somehow to get a more robust community moving forward than we have now.
Wait, I have thought about this Doc. I am not going to give you an upvote because all that does it give you a notifcation to delete – am I right?
that is very true – i suspect on most days I delete 20 upvotes of people that upvoted but didn’t actually interact with the article.
to answer your question up above upvotes and downvotes mean nothing. period. they are simply a hook to hang a hat on , and none of us wear hats.
Then I think that is a trend I can eliminate and use the time I would spend doing that making comments. (Am I thinking correctly are deep threads what I see on the lot?
yes very similar to the lot and how conversations roll there.
All of us here appreciate your comments. You give us hope while keeping your sense of humor. I need it so much these days
You are correct. Everyone here appreciates what Doc does.
awww made me blush today!
i am here sis! anytime! i understand the situation (a little) and if there is anything I can do let me know!
Thank you for your caring spirit. Many people can and will learn how to care for mankind through you.
you honor me with words of praise that made me sniffle! thank you so much!
