Quiz: Is It An Herb Or Not?

Anyone who has read the article, “What is meant by the term herb” should have no problem breezing right through this quiz. Some people may be able to do well, even if they haven’t read the article, but this is a relatively simple quiz.

The whole point of this quiz is that plants will be mentioned and the only task is to determine if they are herbs, botanically, or if they aren’t. It might require a little bit of thought to answer the questions, though.

    • That is one reason I made sure to include pictures of each. If you don’t know what a plant is, though, it wouldn’t be expected that you’d know if it was an herb or not.

  1. I got them all right, but only by going by your “woody” definition. However, I think there comes a point where you have to wonder if a definition is performing a useful purpose, or if another term needs to be introduced. If mushrooms and kelp are put into the same category as thyme and coriander, then the common usage of the word “herb” is clearly not working.

    • That is when ‘spice’ or ‘seasoning’ would be a clearer term. “Herb” is a botanical term that is simply commonly used today to refer to a plant used to spice or flavor food. That isn’t what the word means, but that doesn’t stop people from using it in that way. :))
