This one may surprise a lot of people. Lake Atanasovsko is a salt coastal lake north of Burgas, Bulgaria. It is located in direct proximity of the Black Sea. If you find this place interesting, please, check out my post Interesting Facts About Some Bulgarian Cities.
The lake owes its amazing pink color to microscopic brine shrimp and seaweed that is rich in beta carotene, as well as the magnesium salt in the water. It’s definitely a lot more impressive to see it in person, especially when the water is dark pink or almost red.
The lake provides medicinal mud and lye, which are very valuable for the local people. You can see lots of people lying in the lake and they swear by its healing properties.
Also, lake Atanasovsko supplies about 40,000 tons of salt every year.
Another interesting thing about the lake is the diversity of flora and fauna. The lake is on the important Via Pontica bird migration route and it’s one of the key ornithological locations in Bulgaria, with 314 species of birds being present (12 of which are globally endangered).

It is amazing! It’s not too far from me. I would like to visit it.
It really is an impressive place. I didn’t know about it until a few years ago.
I was correct, but my reasoning was not. I was thinking stressed algae not brine shrimp and beta carotene seaweed. Very interesting, and so beautiful!
The most important thing is you got the color, it’s impressive! Flamingos get their color from the food they get in such lakes. My dream is to see flamingos one day, haha.
The lagoon closest to us used to turn pink in the spring and had 100’s of flamingos in it when I was a kid. Pollution killed the shrimp and the flamingos lost they’re color, turned almost white, then relocated.
That’s really a pity! We don’t have flamingos here, but sometimes in late spring they pass through the lakes and spend some time there.

the pink is interesting, for the most part, red blooms (that appear pink from overhead) are bad news. This is cool, a pink bloom that isn’t unhealthy algae!
It’s almost surreal to see all the people floating on the lake,but they swear that it’s very beneficial for their health.
you never know – it is always interesting to me when we talk about that kind of water treatment. I would not get in!
Me neither, because I have dry skin and that much salt is not ideal for that.

Under the pink water, there’s black medicinal mud that people also use.
So they come out of the water looking like the creature from the black lagoon? yuck
