Technology Wander – my review of the Oculus Go

I have been using the Oculus Go headset for the past few months. It, versus the Oculus Rift, is closer to the Hololens in that it is a stand-alone product. The biggest difference between Go and Hololens is the fact that Hololens is an AR (or were you right now, augmented reality) versus the immersive nature of the Go headset or Virtual Reality.  Having had a chance to use the two, I can say the first thing about a headset has to be fit. The next area of concern is the weight of the headset.“ The Oculus Go is a portable or mobile headset. It does not require a computer. The Oculus Rift requires a computer. Of the two you can interact with more complex environments with the Rift than the Go.

But, Go is very impressive as a solution. I enjoy using the Go headset as a way to watch Hulu and Netflix documentaries and ESPN events. Eventually, I suspect that there will be remote clients for Cable/Satellite providers for the Go system as well. That way you can watch live sporting and other live events on a simulated 100-inch television. I also have an application the Go that allows me to connect my computer to the Go, making it into a great portable monitor. I still prefer using a projector, as having the headset on means that I am completely touch typing. I am more likely to make errors when I cannot look down and check my finger placement from time to time.

AR and VR are interesting conversations. AR integrates what you see (real world) with additional information. VR or Virtual Reality immerses you in the environment. I currently have a virtual environment that places you in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef. You can also choose space, cityscapes, and countrysides. Oculus GO also as onboard memory so you can take the system where you go! IT does well in sunlight or darkness because you are viewing the screen of the GO and you don’t see the real world. I wouldn’t walk around with Oculus Go on; you won’t be able to see. You can walk around with Hololens on, but not with Go on. Overall my rating for the Oculus go is 9 out of 10.
