When I was walking in nature at a young age, my parents always said to me: don’t tear the flowers. They had protected plants in mind. The first plant species that has been secured in Slovenian, the edelweiss – symbol of the Alps. Edelweiss is one of Europe’s most famous flowers. The very name suggests that the home of this beautiful flower is a mountain world. Edelweiss was threatened with extinction years ago due to the onset of mailboxes. Edelweiss can be found on rocky cliffs, wall cracks, and rarely on meadows between 1500 and 2400 meters in height. They are unevenly distributed, usually growing in unreachable places. It is an extremely humble and stubborn flower, and a little sandy soil in the rock crevice is enough for its existence, where it defies wind, rain, and sunshine.

Oh yes, we call it Alpine Star! ?
I didn’t know it was protected, hopefully I’ve never gathered any. ?
Yes, it is protected in our country. I do not know if it is also protected in your country ?
Thank you. Yes, almost all the members remember this movie.
It’s been a long time I didn’t saw this flower again, maybe more than thirty years ago when I was climbing a mountain. Btw, I do not know for sure whether Edelweiss in your place is the same as in the mountains in my country.
This is an interesting question. I suppose it’s the same, but I can be wrong.
I see a similarity, but what makes me unable to confirm is that what is in our mountains is called Javanese Edelweiss (Anaphalis javanica).
We have it here in Bulgaria too, it’s a precious flower!
You are right. This plant can really be protected.
Planika is a really beautiful plant, dear Vidocka … it is protected by law in our country
Thank you, Lado. You’re right, she’s really protected.
Many mountains had already paid for their lives when they wanted to tear it down
i love this gentle flower – what a great picture!
Thank you so much. I had to climb quite high to capture this picture. ?
it does grow in the mountains right?
You are right. This plant grows in the mountains.
i believe I saw it once while walking in Zurich up in the Alps!
Very beautiful plant , thanks for sharing
Thank you. I’m glad you like it
First time I have seen Eldelweiss….All I can think of is that song on the Sound of music.
Yes, we have some protected plants in New Zealand as well
One is the Kauri tree.
Most members have heard of this plant in song. It is true that this plant thrives in the Alpine world.
Have you ever seen an edelweiss flower ? Do you have to climb high to get to one?
I wouldn’t have known about these flowers if not for the song in the movie sound of music. I was very interested to know about the flower and read all about many years later it in the age of the internet.
I assume you do not have the climatic conditions for this plant in your country. Lucky we have the internet ?
You took me to the movie Sound of Music where there is a song on Edelweiss
I think Sandal wood tree in our country is protected.
I am very happy to have brought you back to fond memories. ?
It is a beautiful plant. I am not aware of ever seeing one myself. Do you often find great things on your walks.
Thank you. You are right. We can see a lot if we walk with our eyes open.
That is a lovely flower and I first became aware of it when I saw the movie The Sound of Music and heard the song Edelweiss
I saw this plant for the first time when I was on vacation with my aunt. It’s been a long time since I was a kid.
What a special plant. I am sure we have protected lints in the US but I cannot thing of any right now.
Thank you. She’s really special and I’m not surprised she’s protected.
I researched about the endangered plants here in the US and was surprised at how long the list was. Here is link if you are interested.
