Instead of salsa verde I put cucumbers with Lebanese seasoning and labne in my beef tacos tonight. Then I added a splash of Trader Joe’s Yuzu Hot Sauce. The result was like visiting three very different cultures, Mediterranean , Mexican, and Japanese.
Yuzu is a citrus fruit that looks very much like a lemon, but it has huge seeds. Yuzu sauce is made from the rind and the juice, which had the unique characteristic of retaining it’s sour flavor even when cooked on high heat. It is expensive because the plant is somewhat rare and there is not much juice in a Yuzu. But a little Yuzu goes a long ways.
The Lebanese seasoning consists of thyme, sesame seeds, and sumac. Sumac is a brownish red seasoning made from the seeds of the kind of sumac tree that is not poisonous. It also has a citrus-like flavor which for some reason goes really well with cucumber.
The shrimp colored stuff top left of my plate is preserved ginger. It is a little too salty and too sweet which is probably why I love it so. No tapioca pudding for me tonight because ginger was my dessert.

Everything looks yummy, although I haven’t tried yuzu. I have never tried tapioca pudding either.
I have enjoyed tapioca pudding since infancy, with a dollop of real whipped cream on top, of course.
I never heard of yuzu or his sauce
I was shopping in the store that makes it and they were giving out samples to taste. They know what they are doing with that!
I’ve never tried yuzu but if I see it in stores I will try it, I’ll probably like the taste.
If you try it I hope you like it.
I’ve never heard of yuzu or its sauce, let alone tried it. I’m surprised you didn’t have a “no” answer for question 2.
Hah! I am pretty sure I did, but it went south, apparently.
Sometimes the templates here have a mind of their own.
Yeppers, strange things happen. All part of the fun.
Looks and sounds interesting! My one daughter loves Mexican food. I can eat it but Chinese is my favorite.
Chinese is my favorite, too, LaJenna.
I am one yuzu eating fool. It features prominently in Japanese cuisine. Have you ever had pickled yuzu? It’s a real treat!
Not yet, but I’m sure I would like it. I will keep an eye out for pickled yuzu!
I highly recommend it. You should be able to find it at a Japanese market or even a 99 Ranch…
Thank you, I will go past a 99 Ranch on my next trip, cool, will look for it there!
they’ve got a crazy selection and low prices
I have never seen it anywhere in the US except for Trader Joe’s but they probably have it in Japanese stores. I understand the Korean version is called Yuzu, but made with Citron instead.
Never tried it but I would like to try Yuzu.
They were giving out samples of their broccoli slaw and when I asked what sauce that was on it, the clerk went and got me a bottle of the Yuzu. I have been buying it ever since, but a bottle lasts a long time.
Looks very good, would have to leave off the hot sauce.
The Trader Joe’s brand is a bit hot.
Sounds interesting. The tacos sound great. I might have to stop in at trader joes!!
I don’t usually put the Yuzu sauce on anything but cole slaw. Some things it just isn’t a good fit.
very interesting post..
I am always looking for something different.
This looks very interesting to me ..I did not try any of this … I think that some of the spices are not in our market ..People did not even hear about them.I would like to once again try all this ..
Yes, marija64 it is not in the usual stores and although several vendors sell sauces with the yuzu fruit in them, they are rather expensive! It is an ingredient in fish sauce, too, by that I mean sauce made out of raw fish, not sauce that you put on fish.
