Are You Paying Attention When Proofreading?

Do you make a lot of typos or grammar mistakes when writing? Are you paying enough attention when proofreading?

Here’s a useful website that you might like. The site is called Grammarly.com and is a writing-enhancement platform.

I know that a lot of the users here are not native English speakers. However, the site could be useful for native English speakers, too. We often make typos and small mistakes even in our native languages. This proofreading software can be very helpful in that case.

About the site

In order to use the site, you have to make an account first. The free version finds a lot of the common mistakes and shows you where in the text the problem is.

For a more advanced correction, you can get the paid version. However, in my opinion, the free version is good enough, and I haven’t purchased the advanced one.

In the free version, you still get basic information about the advanced mistakes you have made, but the site doesn’t tell you where the mistake is. I think that it can actually be useful since it’s like an exercise. You have to think and find what you wrote wrong on your own. Or, you can type the sentences one by one and this way you’ll easily find the mistake.

You can get the extension and use the software everywhere. There’s also an app, but I haven’t tried it yet.

Other sites

Before I found this website, I often used sites like Lang-8 and Italki where you write text and native language speakers correct it for you. However, you have to wait until someone reads your text, while in Grammarly you have the results immediately. What’s more, sometimes a real person can miss a mistake, but the software usually finds all the issues.

This post is part of my challenge Sharing Is Caring where we share useful information and resources with each other.

  1. Just today I downloaded this program you are writing about. And it is awesome. I needed to check my grammar and spelling, and I stumbled upon this program and I gave it a try. Awesome! I recommend it highly!

  2. Very useful post for me because I’m not a native speaker. Always try to pay a lot of attention when proofreading, but from time to time typos still creep into my texts. Hope very much that Grammarly.com will help me with this problem!!! Thank you very much for this super publication!!!

    • Unfortunately, I don’t know other sites like that. If I think of something, I’ll let you know. 🙂 Medium is good for microblogging, but I don’t know if it gains a lot of readers.

    • That’s true, but these tools save some time, and they can be useful for non-native English speakers because no matter how much we proofread, there still can be grammar mistakes of which we may not be aware.

      • I am not a non-native speaker, too. But I tried not to depend on such tools. On the other hand, I do think it is a good way to proofread certain write-ups.

  3. This is great Ellie. I have always asked for us to be able to correct our posts after publishing but not yet. I do not like typos and check as often as i publish and still miss words. Comments as well.

    • Thank you, Carol! Not being able to edit our posts is my biggest problem. Hopefully, they will change that soon. Even if there are not any typos, there still can be some technical issues and sometimes the post doesn’t turn out right; or I just want to add something later.

  4. Great! I also use Grammarly but it did not occur to me to share it in writing like this, although I often recommend it to friends in Virily when they ask about their post that does not get away from moderation.
