6. CAPYBARA: Bearing a strong resemblance to its guinea pig cousin, the capybara is the largest rodent on Earth, weighing in at more than 100 pounds and standing two feet tall. It lives in the dense vegetation that surrounds water, and frequently leaps in water bodies to hide from predators. It can hold its breath for up to five minutes.
Like other rodents, capybaras’ teeth grow continuously, and they wear them down by grazing on aquatic plants, grasses, and other plentiful plants.
They also eat their own feces in the morning. That’s when their poo is protein rich from the high number of microbes digesting the previous day’s meals. Because the grasses they eat are so hard to digest, eating their waste essentially allows them to digest it twice.

I didn’t know it was the largest rodent on Earth. I always learn interesting things from your series. Thanks.
That is what my research revealed. Amazing and glad you enjoyed.
The “swamp rat” is an interesting creature.
thanks for sharing this – the picture was perfect!
Is that a name you gave him, or is it official?
that is their nickname, they often live in swampy areas.
Very cool. They have a lot of traits similar to the rabbit, I was researching rabbits yesterday. But I know these are rodents and rabbits are mammals.
they are very closely related to the rats of the world!
Oh well, rats need attention too. 🙂
Capybara is interesting but perhaps it is ugly
I think most animals are beautiful, especially the endangered ones. 🙂
*Correction* The capybara is not currently classified as an endangered species, although it is threatened by deforestation, habitat destruction, and illegal poaching.
Great information for sharing. Thank you
You are welcome, this is a fun series.
Capybaras are such adorable animals.
I have to agree with you.
Very unique and interesting animal indeed. I find them adorable.
I thought so and they are cuties. I love all animals.
A very interesting animal. I think I saw her at the zoo.
I think I have seen these at the zoo as well.
Most would not even notice. It makes them stand out for sure.
It really stood out to me. I wonder why?
We see the little things in life. 🙂 Many do not.
The thing that stands out to me is the snub like nose.
Most would not even notice. It makes them stand out for sure.
