Recently there has been a very serious incident on White Island in the Bay of Plenty today.
I just got this news on the 6 O’Clock News…
Here are the images on NewsHub…There are about 23 people rescued and 25 people unaccounted for and one person has died.

This is very sad news. I’m sad to hear about such tragedies. Was there no warning sign?
I’m surprised geologists and authorities weren’t monitoring volcanic activity, maybe they could’ve closed off the area beforehand.

Thanks Doc, 23 were rescued but 5 of those later died of severe burns. There are people on the island and it is unsafe to go back to the island as plumes of smoke go into the air.

Yes, White Island has been an active volcano for a while and yet people still visit the Island for tourism. It has never been liveable. Thanks Ileana.
I just heard on the radio reports about the eruption of a volcano in the White Island and that at least one person has lost his life … a really great tragedy … we can only hope that there won’t be many more dead
Sorry to say 5 of the 23 survivors have died of probably burns. Some people are left on the island and it is unsafe to rescue them as plumes of smoke go into the air.
It is night now so they may attempt to rescue others in the morning.

Thanks so much Lado, sadly some more of the survivors have died but the ones who died had 90% burns on their bodies.
I don’t think the 8 left on the island had a chance and probably were killed instantly …
Many left in hospital need help breathing…let alone the horrific burns..
It is bad when such calamities aren’t perceived earlier
Well, White Island has been active as a volcano for quite some time, I have flown over it over 20 years ago and there is always smoke from the island.
No one should ever go there as tourists, but it definetly should be watched.
I cry because there was no warning about the volcano and that many people were injured and one died. I hope for the survivors much health and to repair the damage as fast as possible.
We will see, 18 survivors are still alive Rachael and some of those are in critical condition in hospital, they are prevented from rescuing anyone from the island so far, for it is now night and the volcano has become more active
Not one person Rachael should have ever gone to this island as a tourist..It has been erupting for many years
No notice is served when a volcano erupts and to think this was the worst in years. That is nature’s way.
For every new volcanic eruption there is usually some warning, however, as I told others, this White Island has been active for a very long time, tourists should never go there, but the island needs to be watched.

This is absolutely crazy because there was no warning sign that the volcano was going to erupt. There is too much tragedy in the world.
I would say this could be entirely preventable but thanks for your concern, tourists should never have come here in the first place its been active for years
I didn’t know that it was still active. They only mentioned on CNN that the volcano erupted.

I am sorry for the situation of Americans there but then I don’t live there and cant solve the world.
So far, 5 have died from The volcanic eruption, it is not sure how many tourists or NZ people so far were on the island. I m not sure how many people needing rescuing are on the island but 18 were rescued, and some have critical burns.
It is night now, the volcano has become dangerously active and it is unsafe for a rescue attempt, will know more in the morning
