Bluebird Blog 2018 #2 ~ Nest Building

Maybe I can start a part two on my Bluebird Blog for 2018. In case you missed my last one, click here to see the babies leave the nest: Fledge Day

This morning I noticed the male and female bluebirds checking the house out. Then they started nest building. And were chasing away the ratbirds (sparrows). I was getting a little excited but still waiting and watching. They have done this before and then leave. So I kept watching all morning. Then I saw a baby bluebird on the house. You can tell by the spots. I carefully went out and got this photo of the Mom and baby.

This is the first time to see the baby since they all five fledged a few weeks ago. Then to my surprise three showed up. A great morning! They splashed in the birdbath and hung out with Mom and Dad as only the Mom built the nest. She carried pine straw from the nearby pine tree to make the very neat nest. Funny how the family sat and watched Mom do all the work. But Dad was the lookout for any predators. Here is what she has done so far.

She still has about half to go. Not bad for just one bird and a couple of hours of work. I will keep you posted if things progress. Hopefully new eggs and babies soon. Seeing these babies have really brightened my day and my week.

  1. Nice that you can actually observe what’s going in in the bird house. I have one of the larger condo type ones and its a hive of activity but I wish I could view the whole operation.

    • Yes it is exciting. Bluebirds have a special kind of box, they will not nest with others birds. The condos are nice but not for bluebirds. Enjoy yours!
