Bluebird Blog Update ~ Fledge Day

I have been writing about my backyard Bluebirds of Happiness. My last update in case you missed it is here Surprise Catch. Today is actually day 18. The bluebirds fledge between day 16-18. I have been pacing like an expectant mother the last few days. Yes I get deep into this experience. The key when you are waiting for them to fledge is to watch the parents. I have a lot of trees in my yard and if I am lucky, they will fly into one and stay for a little while. They will eventually leave but for now I love seeing them fly right out of the box. Amazing how they know how to fly isn’t it! Of course I missed the first two.

There are three still in the box right now. I slowly went out to check the tree the female had been circling. And there it was. A beautiful little baby bird. I was getting dive bombed by both parents, (literally), so I took a couple of photos and came back inside. I took a risk even being in the backyard. They get protective during this time. As they should. So this photo was a challenge to get.  It could be tomorrow before the other two fledge, it happens when they get ready. But there is one with his head out of the door so maybe they will all fledge today. Yes I am a little excited. This is the day I have been waiting on. If they can fly straight from the box to a tree, they are usually healthy. So far so good.

My Bluebirds of Happiness born in Dustin’s memorial garden. I am so blessed.

  1. Hmm it’s fun to know about how birds grow up…
I’ve raised a baby bird before (abandoned or probably the nest is destroyed by storm) and it’s a good experience… the baby we raised didn’t dare to fly far though …

  2. Carol, it is so wonderful to see you getting all worked up over your beautiful 2-winged babies. I voted more bluebird posts! 2nd nests, by all means. Keep ’em coming!
