In researching this black wasp on my deck sedum, it looks like a Potter Wasp. There are a variety of Potter Wasps in North America. Those in the genus Euodynerus look similar to each other, with some species requiring close inspection to differentiate. Black bodies have a short yellow band above the waist on the thorax. Usually they will leave you alone if you don’t invade their space. I kept my distance with my camera. More amazing little critters in my deck garden.

I don’t go after them if they are not building a nest near my door. But if they come in or near a building I get them with the electronic bug zapper.
Same here, he was not disturbing anything, actually made a cool photo I thought.
You have cool potter wasps shot, Carol. The small handsome guy that quite fierce if it feel disturbed.
He is actually small compared to the ones I usually see. Thanks!
Thank you for your comment.
Great shot! They don’t stay still very long!! The worst wasp we have is the Tarantula, luckily I have never been stung by one of those. My worst sting came from an ant, although the red wasp sure packs a punch.
I was sneaky and patient to get this one Kim. Hornet stings have to be the worst.
Why do they have to hit you at 500 mph? Man they do hurt don’t they.
I know, they do not mess around.
Great photo & post…very informative! I stay away from them if I can too…not allergic luckily but still don’t like getting stung.
Thanks Courtney, I keep my distance.
I’ve a wasp start a family in my balcony…
and then we got rid of it
Good for you. If you see a nest it is always best to get rid of it carefully.
I am allergic to wasp stings. Got stung once in the back of the head when I was small, and I am more sensitive to wasp stings now.
I have been in the ER more than once. I keep a safe distance.
The wasps and I have come to a peaceful coexistence. As long as they stay off the deck, we are at peace.
That is a great way to exist with them. My problem is they don’t stay off the deck.
yup. then we have the RAID accord. That seems to solve the second problem when they create it.
Indeed it has to be around in the summer.
I stand further from the wasp and the bee…I have bad experiences with them.
I should do the same as I have had stings by both many times.
