What is the thing that foreigners always talk about regarding your country that you think is untrue or exaggerated? Or what surprises tourists when they visit your place?
You can also share a misconception you had before visiting a place for the first time. I am very curious to read your answers.

I think people think Americans are arrogant and ignorant. Sad thing is that it’s true. LOL.
Having a celebrity star as president who was born rich and who has no previous experience as politician does not help
People in bigger or more powerful countries tend to be arrogant.
“To whom much is given, much is required.” Nations that have been blessed should encourage its citizens to be thankful, humble, and charitable. It only takes a virus to make people realize that nobody is “big and powerful”.
People think everybody has siesta in Spain and we are lazy
That’s a common misconception. But I think a siesta in the summer heat is a good thing. Even here, elder people at the countryside take this afternoon rest to avoid the heat.
I don’t think that! I never thought that. I’ve heard they take siestas in Mexico. But never that they were lazy for doing it. They were pointed to as an example of how Americans should learn to slow down, take it easy, and enjoy the goodness of life. Siestas are a good thing. Honestly! I didn’t even know people in Spain also enjoyed siestas. I’m living on the wrong side of the planet. LOL.
Yes, Siesta is a Spanish Invention. Something that has been exported worldwide and has given Spain a bad reputation
Well! I’m glad they invented it! The rest of the world should be thankful too! But? Spain didn’t invent that sombrero hat the Mexicans wear when they take their siesta? Did they?
I am sure such sombrero is a Mexican invention since nobody wears it here except mariachis when they sing Mexican songs!!!
Foreigners are surprised that such a large tourist town lacks a train station and train route. Years ago, there was a narrow line with which salt was moved from the sea to the city.
Every place has its peculiarity. Thank you for sharing your experience!
i suspect there are so many about the US it is sad.
1. we are not all anti-immigration.
2. Hollywood portrays the US that never existed.
3. We are the most generous nation on the planet. The US is the first country to respond to national disasters all around the world.
Well dang it Doc. Those are really good. So true. Seems there are more misconceptions about our country now than ever.
That’s true. It’s sad when the prejudice dominates people’s minds.
There are many reasons why people often dislike the US. The same of course is true for China and other large nations.
It is ok to be frustrated with a nation. But we have to base our opinions of people, on the actual person!
Doc Andersen, you are right I have seen so many Hollywood movies and everybody has a notion about the United States that is not true because of your movie industry. I have always thought all people in New York City are rich because of Hollywood movies but it is not true.
thanks pal! there are many misconceptions about the world floating around. I can say that sipping coffee in Istanbul, or in Barcelona, or Prague is the same. Except the coffee is a lot stronger in Turkey!
It was hard for me to discover there are homeless people in New York City as I thought everybody was rich in New York. Regarding coffee, Spain is one of the places in which more different ways of having coffee exist. People love coffee here but I am sure in Turkey has a stronger coffee.
Portugal and Turkey are the ones with really strong coffee.
Italy has amazing coffee, so does Spain. When I was visiting these countries I always used to annoy my hosts by asking if we could stop at Starbucks for a coffee!!!
Great picture … I have no experience … I know what I read and tourists most often mention that they are amazed at our kindness and good food
Thank you so much! It’s great that foreigners have such a good experience there.
That’s why they like to come back and more
People still think we live in the dark ages. They are amazed with our ability to speak their language well and our skill in technology.
It’s sad when the prejudice dominates people’s minds.
It is indeed, but it fun to see their reaction when they see the real thing.
From which country are you???
That is a lovely photo. I guess I can mention Latvia since I lived there for so long. Many people think that the Russians disrupt everything but actually the lifestyle is really nice and slow and easy and so peaceful as long as you don’t live right in the center of the city.
People don’t know much about our parts of Europe.
Not many know India is a developed country. And about other countries, I have visited several of them. I was impressed by how traffic is controlled in almost all countries.
Many years ago when I visited Rome, I was impressed how at the second a pedestrian tries to cross the street, all cars stop. This is still rare here.
I agree, media has the power to exaggerate everything. It’s hard to find unbiased and realistic sources.
Many think the US isn’t safe due to the gun violence in the news.Yes there are guns, but most citizens have never seen or heard a gun being fired. The media has exaggerated many things in our country.
Media has the power to exaggerate everything indeed.
That is absolutely true, I wish others would not believe everything they hear and read.
Foreigners always praise the beauty of our country. I agree with that. But sometimes I am surprised by the fact of which place. But people have different views of beauty.
What is a place that you were surprised foreigners like? Sometimes, it depends on the tourists. Here, many tourists come for party destinations, but they are places I don’t enjoy.
One such place is the Vintgar Gorge. Thousands of tourists visit it, but it’s nothing special to me.
I just saw some photos and it seems to have a gorgeous nature.
It’s true. But I was expecting something else. ?
